Stanley Umude, the guard for the Austin Spurs and a native of San Antonio, made a remarkable impact this week by leading the Austin Spurs to a 104-95 win against the Texas Legends on Wednesday at the Frost Bank Center. After participating in the San Antonio Spurs’ game against the Orlando Magic on Sunday, Umude returned to his G-League team to deliver a standout performance in front of his hometown crowd, highlighting his ongoing journey toward an NBA career.
Key Moments in the Victory Over Texas Legends
The game between the Austin Spurs and Texas Legends remained tightly contested into the third quarter, tied at 66 points. However, Austin surged ahead with a dominant 24-4 run to open the fourth quarter, largely fueled by Umude’s scoring prowess. Throughout the final two quarters, Umude contributed 15 points, finishing the game as Austin’s top scorer with 25 points and earning Player of the Game honors. Despite missing some time with the team during their recent break, his return coincided perfectly with the annual San Antonio home game.
Balancing G-League and NBA Opportunities
Umude spoke about the challenges and excitement of navigating between the G-League and NBA. Reflecting on his journey, he said,
“If somebody told me in middle school, elementary school, that I was going to be playing in front of my hometown, I probably would have believed them then. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time. A lot of people don’t get this opportunity, so the emotions are all over the place.”
After getting the call following Austin’s previous game, Umude was told he might have a chance to play for the San Antonio Spurs during the week, which he embraced with enthusiasm.
Umude added,
“The two-way situation, it could come at any time. I got the call, I think the night after our last game in Austin. They told me I’m gonna be in San Antonio for the week and possibly have a chance to dress.”
Challenging Travel Conditions Preceded Umude’s NBA Appearance
The San Antonio Spurs faced significant travel disruptions on their return from a loss against the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday. Due to heavy winter weather closing the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, the team’s departure was delayed until Sunday morning. Their return game against Orlando on Sunday was postponed twice—first as a precaution and then because of a plane issue requiring a transfer in Atlanta.
Despite the fatigue from these setbacks, the Spurs allowed Umude to be part of the active roster against Orlando.
“I think (Stephon Castle), last second, didn’t play. So I got the opportunity,”
Umude explained.
“Checking in for the first time in my hometown team, it was a big deal.”
Though his playing time was brief, with just two minutes on the court, Umude became only the fifth player in San Antonio Spurs history to appear for the team after graduating from a local high school, marking a significant milestone in his career.
Coach’s Perspective on Umude’s Development
Jacob Chance, Austin Spurs head coach, acknowledged the difficulty faced by two-way players like Umude who must adapt quickly between leagues. He noted,
“It’s not easy, what these two-way guys have to do and bouncing back and forth.”
Chance added,
“(A) lot of room to grow, as I’m sure he would admit, but he’s trending in the right direction,”
highlighting Umude’s progress and potential.
Looking Ahead: Upcoming Match Against Rio Grande Valley Vipers
The Austin Spurs are scheduled to visit the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the G-League affiliate of the Houston Rockets, on Saturday at 8 p.m. The game will take place at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas, offering another opportunity for Umude and his teammates to build on their recent success and continue their season development.
