The Minnesota Timberwolves have surfaced as a significant contender in the potential trade for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, joining teams like the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Miami Heat, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The interest stems not only from Minnesota’s offering but notably because Antetokounmpo himself is drawn to the idea of pairing with Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards.
This development is a positive sign for the Timberwolves franchise, which has yet to claim an NBA title but sees a transformational opportunity should they secure the two-time Finals MVP. With Giannis reportedly eager to join forces with Anthony Edwards, Minnesota could position itself ahead of other suitors in discussions with Milwaukee.
Why Minnesota is Becoming a Leading Destination for Giannis
While cities like New York and the Bay Area may appear more glamorous as destinations, Minnesota’s appeal lies in its talented young core, particularly Anthony Edwards. NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer highlighted that the prospect of playing alongside Edwards has sparked serious backchannel talks, suggesting Minnesota’s legitimacy as a top trade destination despite some challenges the team faces.
On ESPN’s Get Up, Brian Windhorst affirmed that Giannis has expressed genuine interest in Minnesota, stating,
“He has not mentioned that for no reason. This is something that, from what I understand, that Giannis has interest in.”
However, Windhorst also pointed out that the Timberwolves would have to lean on veteran players rather than draft picks or young assets to complete such a trade, making the deal complex but worth monitoring.

The Timberwolves’ limitation in draft picks contrasts with offers from other teams, such as the Warriors who could include several young players and draft assets, or Miami which has a strong package but may face post-trade roster challenges. New York’s need for a major roster overhaul and salary adjustments make a deal there equally complicated.
Insiders Stein and Fischer have notably kept Minnesota and Miami as front-runners in the race to trade for Giannis.
Possible Trade Framework Involving Minnesota and Partners
With Minnesota emerging as a stronger candidate, attention has turned to what assets the Timberwolves might need to part with to acquire Antetokounmpo. Eric Nehm of The Athletic proposed a multi-team deal as a best-case scenario to unite Giannis with Anthony Edwards.
Under Nehm’s plan:
Milwaukee Bucks would receive: Julius Randle, Naz Reid, Portland’s 2030 first-round pick, rights to swap first-round picks in 2028 and 2032 with Minnesota, plus regaining control of their 2029 and 2030 first-round selections.
Minnesota Timberwolves would acquire: Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday.
Portland Trail Blazers would get: Jaden McDaniels and Mike Conley.
Nehm noted,
“The Timberwolves do not have any first-round picks they can trade, but they can give the Bucks the right to swap picks with them in 2028 and 2032.”
He added,
“Those swaps don’t have much value, but they are still something the Bucks can take to make the package stronger.”
This trade structure addresses the Bucks’ need to avoid a full rebuild by receiving established players like Randle and Reid alongside multiple draft picks, while Portland gains promising young talent and a veteran presence. Meanwhile, Minnesota would pair Giannis and Holiday—whom Antetokounmpo reportedly wants to reunite with—with Anthony Edwards, forming a potentially elite core.
Implications of a Giannis and Edwards Partnership in Minnesota
Should this trade materialize, Giannis and Anthony Edwards would create one of the most formidable duos in the NBA. Edwards has already become a prominent face of the league, and holiday’s presence, despite not matching his previous peak form, would add valuable experience. This combination could propel the Timberwolves into serious championship contention.
As discussions progress, Minnesota is evolving from a long shot to a serious player in acquiring one of the NBA’s most coveted stars. The appeal for Giannis to team up with Edwards adds renewed excitement and strategic advantage for the Timberwolves. The prospect of unlocking a championship window by pairing a reigning Finals MVP with a rising star could redefine Minnesota’s trajectory.

The Wolves can throw a pretty compelling package of players for Giannis if they want
The lack of picks might hold them back, but if Milwaukee doesn’t want a full rebuild, Minnesota might be a good trade partner

My position as Minnesota would be, if Giannis is willing to extend, I would trade anything but Ant to get it done, and I would be willing to put basically as much depth as it takes on the table if needed.
Giannis and Ant would be so incredible I'd just figure the rest out later.
