Ron Harper Jr Shines in Celtics’ First Career Start

Ron Harper Jr. made his NBA starting debut as the Boston Celtics cruised to a 114-93 victory over the Houston Rockets. Playing in Boston, Harper Jr. contributed 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists while shooting 50 percent from the field on 4-of-8 attempts in his first career start, showcasing his readiness at the NBA level.

After the game, Harper Jr. shared his feelings about this milestone moment, emphasizing the importance of preparation and seizing opportunities when they arise.

Team meeting. My name was up there on the matchup, so I knew I was getting a start, and I just knew I had to be ready,

Harper Jr. said.

It felt rewarding, obviously, you know, it just felt good to be rewarded for hard work. Dedication, you know. Joe makes a heavy emphasis that everybody’s going to get their shot, so just stay ready and be ready. I felt like I did a good job of that tonight.

Defensive Challenge: Guarding Kevin Durant

Harper Jr.’s first start also came with the challenging responsibility of defending future Hall of Famer Kevin Durant. The Celtics tasked him with limiting Durant’s impact, a demanding assignment for any player, let alone someone in his first career start.

Don’t let him score, man. Just do everything in my power to try to deny him the ball, try to deny him catches, and try to make his life difficult,

Harper Jr explained.

And I feel like the rest of the guys, and I did a great job at that. I feel like we were able to frustrate him a little bit, and it ultimately led to us getting a lot of stops.

His defensive effort helped Boston contain one of the league’s top scorers, contributing significantly to the team’s dominant win.

Harper Jr.’s Contract Situation and Potential Roster Changes

Currently, Harper Jr. is on a two-way contract with the Celtics and has spent significant time playing for the Maine Celtics in the G League this season. However, the recent trade that sent Anfernee Simons to the Chicago Bulls has opened a roster spot, increasing the likelihood that Harper Jr.’s contract could be converted to a standard NBA deal.

This potential change would give Harper Jr. a more permanent role on the Celtics’ roster as the team manages its lineup for the remainder of the season.

Boston’s Trade Prospects as Deadline Nears

Reports from Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston suggest that the Celtics may not be finished making roster moves before the NBA trade deadline. Boston still holds various exceptions and financial flexibility, allowing them to explore additional trades to strengthen the squad.

There’s probably another shoe to drop,

Forsberg said in the Celtics Talk podcast.

It’s not hard to put these pieces together. Chris Boucher was unlikely to be here long-term … so we’ll see what happens from here. They could look at the trade market; they still have plenty of exceptions, and they have plenty of means. They might crawl back onto the first apron depending on how much salary they take on, but they could figure that part out. With the fact that Boucher’s money will come off, it should clear enough money to make some moves.

The Celtics are currently $6 million over the tax threshold, and Executive Brad Stevens is under pressure to both cut costs and improve the roster before the February 5 deadline.

Potential Acquisition of a Veteran Guard for Depth

Forsberg also noted that Boston might seek to add depth at the guard position by acquiring an experienced player on a cost-effective deal. This addition would provide defensive reliability and secondary ball-handling support behind Payton and Derrick.

The comp I would always use is a Kris Dunn type: a veteran guy who plays defense, can be a secondary ball-handler, spell Payton and Derrick at times,

Forsberg said.

(He’s) probably not going to play a ton of minutes in the postseason, but if you could get somebody like that on a minimum deal or end-of-season money, then it’s just another body to navigate both the end of the regular season and potential spot minutes in the postseason.

Still, Harper Jr.’s strong performance in his first start raises the possibility that the Celtics may choose to promote him within their existing roster rather than pursue an external veteran guard.

Implications for Harper Jr. and the Celtics Moving Forward

Ron Harper Jr.’s successful first start not only demonstrated his readiness to contribute at the highest level but also came at a crucial time as the Celtics juggle roster decisions and salary cap constraints. If his contract is converted, he could become a key backup guard, providing valuable minutes as the team navigates the final stretch of the season and postseason.

With potential trades still on the horizon, the Celtics are balancing the need for veteran presence and developing promising young talent such as Harper Jr., signaling an uncertain but pivotal phase for Boston’s roster construction.
