DETROIT – After the New York Knicks acquired Jose Alvarado, Tyler Kolek acknowledged the shift in the team’s depth chart but expressed no offense, especially with teammate Miles McBride sidelined. Kolek emphasized the competitive nature of the NBA, noting that the addition of Alvarado strengthens the Knicks’ championship aspirations.
There’s always competition in this league. Obviously Deuce is out for a little bit. We’re trying to be a championship-level team so you bring in as much talent as you can,
Kolek said after scoring five points in the Knicks’ 118-80 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Friday.
I’m going to compete every single day. He’s going to compete. Everybody on this team is going to compete for minutes.
So it’s no slight to anybody.
Challenges and Opportunities in Kolek’s Role with the Knicks
Kolek has experienced fluctuations in playing time this season, showcasing promising playmaking during critical moments but also struggling defensively and against press defenses. These challenges motivated the Knicks to add depth at the point guard position before the trade deadline. Despite this, Kolek expects to continue receiving opportunities due to McBride’s current injury.
The Knicks acquired Alvarado by trading two second-round picks, viewing him as an important piece moving forward. However, Alvarado was not immediately available for Friday’s game in Detroit, having yet to finish his physical and expected to debut against Boston on Sunday. This left Kolek as the lone backup point guard for that game.
Assuming no further injuries, the Knicks now operate with a five-guard rotation including Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Landry Shamet, Alvarado, and Kolek.

Kolek explained.
Do whatever the team needs from me, whatever the coach needs from me. When I get in there, change the pace. Get guys the ball.
Knicks’ Current Trade Strategy and Team Outlook
The Knicks made minimal moves at the trade deadline aside from swapping Guerschon Yabusele for Alvarado, signaling confidence in their current roster. Kolek said the trade action did not cause him personal stress.
It was not much. I feel like there wasn’t a lot of talk about myself moving,
he stated.
I feel like that would’ve been a little bit more stressful and more weight on it.
With McBride out until the playoffs following sports hernia surgery, Kolek’s role as backup point guard remains important in maintaining team stability. The Knicks’ depth at guard reflects their intention to intensify competition for playing time as they pursue a title this season.
