Tyler Kolek was born on March 27, 2001, in Providence, Rhode Island. He grew up in Cumberland, Rhode Island, where he initially attended Cumberland High School. Before his senior year, he transferred to St. George’s School. During his junior year, Kolek was recognized as the Rhode Island Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year, averaging 18.6 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.5 steals per game. He committed to play college basketball for George Mason University, choosing them over offers from several other schools including Elon, Northeastern, Holy Cross, and Vermont.

Kolek began his collegiate basketball career at George Mason, where he made an immediate impact.
