Jose Alvarado Bio
Jose Alvarado (born April 12, 1998) is an American professional basketball player who plays for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). A point guard known for his relentless on-ball pressure, Alvarado earned the nickname “Grand Theft Alvarado” because of his exceptional ability to generate steals. He played college basketball for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets from 2017 to 2021 and has represented Puerto Rico in international competition since 2022. In 2026, he became the third Puerto Rican to win an NBA championship.
Early Life and Background
Jose Alvarado was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in the Lindsay Park section of Williamsburg before his family moved to the Pomonok Houses public housing project in Queens. His father, Jose Alvarado Sr., is an electrician of Puerto Rican descent, and his mother, Odilia Martinez, is of Mexican descent and was a stay-at-home parent. As a child, Alvarado played football but quit after injuring his neck, and his parents enrolled him in Catholic Youth Organization basketball at St. Ann’s in Flushing, Queens, where he first fell in love with the game.
Alvarado later attended Christ the King Regional High School in Middle Village, Queens. As a junior, he averaged 17 points and 6.5 assists per game and was named Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Player of the Year. As a senior, he recorded 18 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, and 10 steals for the first quadruple-double in school history, and was named TimesLedger Player of the Year. Alvarado joined the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in 2017 and started all 25 games of his freshman season before a left elbow fracture ended his year early. As a sophomore, he led the team in scoring, assists, and steals and posted a career-high 29 points in a win over Pittsburgh. After passing on an extra year of eligibility caused by COVID-19 cancellations, Jose Alvarado declared for the 2021 NBA draft and went undrafted. On August 19, 2021, he signed a two-way contract with the New Orleans Pelicans, splitting his time between the Pelicans and their NBA G League affiliate, the Birmingham Squadron. On March 28, 2022, his two-way deal was converted into a standard four-year, $6.5 million contract, making him eligible for postseason play.
