Early Life and Background

Joel Embiid was born on March 16, 1994, in Yaoundé, Cameroon. He was raised in a family where his father served as a military officer. During his childhood, Embiid played volleyball and soccer, initially aspiring to pursue a professional volleyball career in Europe. However, at the age of 15, he transitioned to basketball, drawing inspiration from NBA Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon. His talent was recognized at a basketball camp by Luc Mbah a Moute, a fellow Cameroonian and NBA player, who became his mentor. This mentorship led Embiid to move to the United States at the age of 16 to focus on basketball. Embiid first attended Montverde Academy in Florida but transferred to The Rock School, where he excelled as a senior, leading his team to a state championship while averaging impressive statistics.

Path to Basketball

As a highly regarded five-star recruit, Joel Embiid committed to the University of Kansas in November 2012. During his one season with the Jayhawks, he played 28 games, averaging 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game. His performance earned him the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors and a spot on the second-team All-Big 12. However, a stress fracture in his back sidelined him during the Big 12 tournament and the NCAA tournament. On April 9, 2014, Embiid declared for the NBA draft, foregoing his remaining college eligibility. He underwent surgery for a broken navicular bone in his right foot shortly before the draft and was selected third overall by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Embiid’s breakthrough season came in 2017 when he signed a five-year, $148 million contract extension with the 76ers.
