Knicks’ Jalen Brunson Praises Mike Brown’s Impact This Season

Jalen Brunson continues to solidify his role as the centerpiece of the New York Knicks, fresh off his third consecutive All-Star nod and in contention for First-Team All-NBA honors. As the team’s leader at Madison Square Garden, Brunson is singularly focused on one objective this season: winning.

“Anything less than that, and we fall short of our goal. The goal has always been to help my team win a championship, and I’m focusing on that,”

Brunson told Bleacher Report, emphasizing the importance of achieving team success above all else.

Brunson’s Contributions Elevate Knicks’ Championship Aspirations

Brunson’s impressive stat line—averaging 26.8 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per game while shooting 47.1% from the field and 37.1% from beyond the arc—underpins his leadership as New York’s go-to clutch performer and offensive engine. He played a similar pivotal role last season when the Knicks, buoyed by home-court advantage, reached the Eastern Conference Finals only to fall to the Indiana Pacers.

That playoff defeat, while disappointing, is fueling the team’s drive this year. Brunson reflected on the bittersweet experience, saying,

“Whenever you get close like that, it feels like an opportunity slipped through your hands. We knew taking the next step is one of our goals, but we can’t just jump right back in. We have to start our journey all over again and integrate everything together. It’s not easy, but it’s something we’re thinking about every single day. And that’s what we’re pushing for.”

Mike Brown’s Arrival Sparks New Energy for the Knicks

The most notable change for the Knicks this season is on the sidelines with the hiring of veteran coach Mike Brown, who replaced Tom Thibodeau following the painful playoff exit. Brown brings a remarkable track record, including 454 wins in 758 career games and two NBA Coach of the Year awards across his stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Sacramento Kings.

Brown also led the 2006-07 Cavaliers to the NBA Finals and is nearing his eighth playoff appearance in 12 seasons as a head coach. His reputation and experience have already made a strong impact on Brunson and the team.

“Mike’s a great guy,” Brunson shared.

“The person he is and the way he introduced himself to me and my family was something that really stood out. The person he is has made an impact on us as a team. Just who he is and how he carries himself. As a coach, he pushes us every single day and wants us to be better by holding us accountable so we can become the best team we can be. And he’s been doing that since day one.”

Eastern Conference Contenders and the Knicks’ Position

With Brown at the helm, the Knicks have emerged as credible contenders in the tightly packed Eastern Conference, competing with established squads like the Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics, and Cleveland Cavaliers. Given the closeness of these competing teams, incremental improvements or strategic moves could determine playoff success or a premature exit.

Prior to the February 5 trade deadline, the Knicks were linked to high-profile names such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Karl-Anthony Towns was rumored to be a trade asset. Ultimately, the front office chose to maintain the team’s core, signaling confidence in Brunson and his teammates heading into the final stretch.

Brunson expressed his belief in the squad, stating,

“I feel like they believe in us, but most importantly we believe in each other. So the team that we have, we feel like we have enough and we’re good enough. Our attention to detail is going to be better every single day. We know the details and all the little things matter, and our play has shown that. We definitely had a little bit of a low in January, but we’re fighting back and we have to continue to do that.”

Adding Depth with New Acquisition Jose Alvarado

Although the Knicks refrained from blockbuster trades, they bolstered their backcourt depth by acquiring Jose Alvarado from the New Orleans Pelicans. This addition came as a strategic response to Miles McBride’s injury and provided New York with a tenacious perimeter defender capable of applying full-court pressure.

Alvarado quickly earned Brunson’s respect, especially for his offensive contributions, highlighted by an eight three-pointer performance against the Philadelphia 76ers just two games after joining the team.

Brunson remarked,

“I think he’s a great teammate first and foremost. He just wants to bring energy and help the team win, that’s just who he is. I’m really excited we have him, I think he’s going to integrate well with us.”

Brunson’s Off-Court Role and Endorsements

Beyond basketball, Brunson represents Body Armor as part of its Choose Better campaign, which encourages thoughtful daily decisions, including proper hydration. This partnership coincides with Body Armor’s return as the official hydration sponsor of March Madness, a key college basketball event.

“We’ve been working together for a couple years now, and it’s been fantastic,”

Brunson said.

“I feel like our ideas align, and they’ve always helped me with everything on and off the court. With this campaign and sponsoring March Madness, I think that’s really cool as well since some of my highlights came during that time. And this Choose Better campaign telling student athletes to commit to themselves by choosing better every single day, most importantly with hydration, is something I truly believe in.”

Reflecting on Collegiate Success at Villanova

Brunson’s connection to March Madness is deep-rooted, as he was a standout player for Villanova University, where he played three seasons from 2015 to 2018. His tenure featured two national titles and numerous prestigious awards such as the Associated Press Player of the Year, the Wooden Award, and the Naismith Award.

However, Brunson values the relationships he built during that time even more than the victories. He explained,

“Obviously, you remember winning and holding up the trophy, but the relationships that were made during those couple years mean the most to me. I think college is a little different now with the landscape, but my time in college is something I’ll never forget regardless of the winning. It was a great time, and I made great relationships that last to this day.”

He added with a laugh, “the winning did help.”

Villanova’s Resurgence Under New Leadership

Villanova’s program has not returned to March Madness since their 2022 Final Four appearance, facing a three-year tournament drought that ultimately led to a coaching change. This season, Kevin Willard, formerly head coach at Iona, Seton Hall, and Maryland, is leading the Wildcats and has guided them to a strong 21-6 record overall with a 12-4 mark in Big East play, poised to end their absence from the Big Dance.

Brunson praised the current team’s grit and resilience, saying,

“They play tough, you can never count them out. That’s something that reminds me of my teams when I was there and the teams before me. I’m just really excited to see the success that they’re having, I know Coach Willard is going to continue to push them every single day.”

A Promising Stretch Ahead for Brunson and the Knicks

As the Knicks position themselves for a deep playoff run under Mike Brown’s leadership, and with Villanova regaining momentum on the college hardwood, Jalen Brunson is set for a demanding but thrilling few months of basketball. His commitment to winning and the steady influence of Brown as the Knicks’ coach create high expectations for what this season can deliver both in New York and beyond.
