Caleb Martin Credits J. Cole for NBA Comeback Boost

Caleb Martin has regained his rhythm on the basketball court, a resurgence accompanied by steady dribbles echoing like a rap beat in the American Airlines Center, where J. Cole’s music often fills the air. The connection to Cole, a Grammy-winning rapper and personal friend, has played a significant role in Martin’s NBA comeback, highlighting their shared roots in North Carolina and mutual support through challenging periods.

Martin’s recent return to form in the NBA coincides with the release of Cole’s seventh studio album, The Fall-Off, which dropped recently. This timing underscores how intertwined Martin’s on-court resurgence and Cole’s musical milestones have become over the past month.

Early Days: From Mocksville to the Charlotte Hornets

Raised in Mocksville, North Carolina, a little over two hours from Fayetteville where Cole is from, Martin’s journey to the NBA began after going undrafted in 2019. He was signed by the Charlotte Hornets, marking the start of his professional career alongside his twin brother, Cody. Over two seasons in Charlotte, Martin averaged 5.0 points and 2.7 rebounds during his sophomore year but was waived in August 2021.

During that uncertain period, Martin found refuge working out at Cole’s private gym in North Carolina. Here, Cole, who played basketball as a walk-on at St. John’s University and turned professional by participating in the inaugural Basketball Africa League, encouraged Martin to keep pushing forward.

J. Cole’s Influence and Key NBA Connections

Cole’s involvement extended beyond music and gym sessions. Recognizing Martin’s potential, Cole reached out to Caron Butler—an NBA champion with the Dallas Mavericks and now a coach with the Miami Heat—to help open doors for Martin’s next opportunity. Butler invited Martin to participate in an open scrimmage where he showcased his skills against potential NBA talent.

Martin described the experience vividly: “I killed the workout,” he said.

“They called me like two hours later while I was riding on my scooter back to the hotel and let me know they were going to give me a two-way spot.”

This marked the beginning of Martin’s revival with the Miami Heat.

Impactful Role in Miami’s 2023 NBA Finals Run

Martin’s two-way contract with the Heat was soon converted to a full NBA deal, and he became an integral part of their surprising run to the 2023 NBA Finals. Notably, during the Eastern Conference Finals against the Boston Celtics, Martin matched the Heat’s franchise record by sinking 22 three-pointers in a single playoff series, cementing his impact on the team’s postseason journey.

Following this breakout performance, Martin secured a multi-year extension and averaged a career-high 10 points per game in the 2023-24 season. Subsequently, he signed a lucrative four-year contract guaranteed for over $32 million with the Philadelphia 76ers, a deal that was part of a trade sending him to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Quentin Grimes.

Challenges and Recovery in Dallas

Martin’s transition to Dallas was complicated by a severe right hip strain that limited him to just 14 games early on, contrasting with Quentin Grimes’s success in Philadelphia. Despite this rocky start, Martin has steadily regained his confidence and form, starting nine of the Mavericks’ last eleven games, improving his shooting accuracy to 52.4% beyond the arc, and averaging 7.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.

Teammate Naji Marshall expressed pride in Martin’s resurgence:

“I think he’s just starting to get his feet back under him,”

he said.

“He’s being the Caleb we all used to. Proud of him. A lot of people don’t make it back from what he was going through and dealing with, so, just proud to see him out there balling, and I hope he can keep it up ‘cause we need it.”

Gratitude and Determination Fueling Martin’s Journey

Martin acknowledges the ups and downs throughout his career and emphasizes his determination to overcome setbacks.

“When you go through tough spots like my situation coming here, getting myself back on track with your body and working your confidence through playing, you realize that you’ve been through worse before,”

he said.

He credits Cole with playing a pivotal role in not only motivating him but helping him reconnect with the NBA world at a critical time. Martin describes Cole as

“a humble dude who rarely gives interviews”

yet is deeply authentic and supportive.

“He just wants to be regular so bad,”

Martin shared.

“He just is really that genuine, just that chill and he’s really a normal guy, but he’s a great human being, bro. He’s authentic and he’s always looking out for everybody.”

The Deeper Meaning Behind Cole’s Latest Album and Martin’s Future

The Fall-Off, expected to be Cole’s final album, celebrates his decade-long reign as one of hip-hop’s finest lyricists and possibly ends his near 20-year career. For Martin, this album represents not only a milestone in his friend’s journey but also an emblem of perseverance and new beginnings.

Though Martin has no plans to “fall off” from his own career resurgence, he looks forward to continuing his bond with Cole, with whom he still works out during the summer when schedules allow. Their friendship remains a cornerstone of Martin’s support system.

Reflecting on a truly meaningful moment in their connection, Martin emphasized the importance of Cole’s role in his comeback.

“Having him help get me to a destination that allowed me to get my career back on track, I’m obviously, forever grateful for that,”

Martin stated.

“That’s still my boy…You know, it’s like family at this point.”
