Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun apologized for directing a sexist insult at a female referee during an NBA game earlier this week. The 23-year-old made the remark during the Rockets’ 114-93 defeat against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday, which led to his ejection from the game. His apology came following Houston’s 112-106 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday, addressing the incident and his behavior.
Details of the Incident and Immediate Remorse
Sengun called referee Jenna Reneau “a bitch” multiple times in reaction to a no-call while he was driving to the basket, sparking criticism and viral attention after social media clips enhanced the audio. The comments prompted his removal from the game and widespread condemnation. After the contest, Sengun expressed regret in a press conference, saying,
“That was just in the moment, and I said some stuff I shouldn’t say, but I felt bad about it.”
He further acknowledged his mistake, stating,
“Sometimes you can’t control yourself, but I should have known better,”
and confirmed that he approached Reneau in the officials’ locker room immediately after the game to apologize in person, shaking her hand and committing that it would not happen again.
“It just happened in the heat of the moment. Then she understood, and it was good on both ends,”
Sengun added, describing the resolution with Reneau after the incident.
Sengun’s Role and Performance with the Rockets This Season
Now in his fifth NBA season, Sengun has emerged as a significant contributor for the Houston Rockets alongside veteran star Kevin Durant. Through 43 games this season, Sengun averages 20.9 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game while shooting at nearly 50 percent from the field. Despite his strong performance, he was excluded from the All-Star roster this season, sparking debates over the perceived snub of the young Turkish center.

Reflecting on the All-Star omission, Sengun remained hopeful and determined, telling reporters,
“It’s my goal after this time, after last year’s, to be also every year. It was disappointing for me, but it happens. We have a lot of talents in the league, and I’m still young. I’m going to make it eventually, and it’s going to make me just work hard.”
He continued,
“I still have goals, I’ve got to make it, and stuff like this just always pushes me in a good way. I just got to work harder, be disciplined in what I’m doing, and hopefully I have a lot of years in the NBA and a lot of All-Stars I will make.”
Significance of the Apology and Future Outlook
Sengun’s apology underscores the importance of accountability and respect within professional sports, especially concerning interactions with referees and officials. His willingness to admit fault publicly and seek forgiveness from Reneau reflects a recognition of the broader social expectations around sportsmanship. Moving forward, this incident may serve as a lesson in maintaining composure amid competitive pressures. Meanwhile, Sengun’s ongoing development as a key Rockets player and his pursuit of multiple All-Star selections will draw continued attention as he works to elevate his career while avoiding similar controversies.
