PHOENIX — Joel Embiid played a key role in the Philadelphia 76ers’ 109-103 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Saturday, overshadowing the injury returns of Devin Booker and Jalen Green. The game took place at Mortgage Matchup Center, where Embiid’s dominant presence and ability to draw fouls frustrated both the Suns and their fans, ultimately helping Philadelphia secure the win.
Phoenix struggled with their three-point shooting throughout the game, a critical factor given their reliance on deep shots, and found themselves unable to completely close a 19-point deficit in the second half despite a late surge in the fourth quarter. The Suns trailed by four points with less than a minute remaining, but could not narrow the gap further to threaten the lead.
Phoenix’s Struggles with Three-Point Shooting and Foul Trouble
The Suns opened the game shooting a dismal 1-for-19 from beyond the arc, missing 18 consecutive attempts that put them at an early disadvantage. Many of these were wide-open shots, described by head coach Jordan Ott as “97 percentile looks.” Since Phoenix ranks seventh in the NBA for the percentage of shots taken from three-point range, their poor shooting severely hindered their offense.
Following a 15-2 Philadelphia run midway through the second quarter, the Suns found themselves trailing 44-28. Ott emphasized the need for the team to focus more on driving to the basket, stating,

“We gotta get to the rim. We love 3s, but we love getting to the rim too and all that does to your offense.”
Phoenix then mounted a brief rally, going on an 8-1 run that shrank the deficit and restored some momentum. However, the 76ers slowed the pace by going to the free-throw line 11 times in the final four and a half minutes before halftime, a strategy that drew frustration from players and fans alike.
Both Embiid and Booker received double technical fouls after an exchange earlier in the half, leading to heightened tensions as the teams headed into the break.
Booker and Embiid Exchange Words Amid Rising Tensions
Discussing the confrontation, Devin Booker said,
“I told him he’s too good of a player to be flopping like that. We had Olympic experience together, he’s somebody I have high respect for. Just competition.”
Despite this, Booker was confused by the technical foul he received during the exchange, saying,
“I asked the ref, ‘What’d I say?’ He said, ‘I don’t know what you said. I just saw you guys talking to each other.’ It’s crazy out here.”
76ers’ Free-Throw Dominance and Suns’ Late Fightback
Joel Embiid, who has frequently been the league leader in free throws drawn per game, continued that trend on Saturday, scoring 33 points though lasting impacts on the floor were mixed as he finished with a minus-10 plus-minus rating. Tyrese Maxey complemented Embiid’s effort by contributing 29 points and maintaining strong efficiency, finishing with a plus-14 on the floor. Maxey hit crucial free throws in the final seconds to seal the win after Booker fouled him on a desperation three-point attempt.
Despite trailing by 16 points early in the fourth quarter, the Suns demonstrated their usual resilience, fighting to close the gap. Dillon Brooks led the comeback attempt with an 11-point fourth quarter, finishing with a team-high 28 points. Brooks also took on the challenging defensive task of guarding Embiid, forcing him to earn his points.
Brooks commented on the refereeing and Embiid’s frequent trips to the line, saying,
“I can guard the flopping and all that. Went to the line about 14 times. It’s a lot, especially for stuff that’s not even shooting fouls. It’s a great crew of refs that were reffing the game for Philly tonight.”
Return of Devin Booker and Jalen Green to Suns Lineup
Devin Booker returned from injury but took some time to find his rhythm, missing his first three shots and not scoring until the second quarter. At halftime, Booker had scored seven points but showed flashes of his usual form to finish with 21 points on 5-of-12 shooting, including 10 free throws made. Booker said his ankle felt “decent” and expressed motivation to contribute following the Suns’ recent loss to Golden State.
Jalen Green, also making his injury return off the bench, opened the game explosively with six first-quarter points, including a slick layup that showcased his skill. Green also contributed with two assists to Phoenix’s big men. However, Green’s impact subsided after the first quarter, and he finished with eight points in 16 minutes and 42 seconds of play. Coach Ott mentioned that there was a plan for managing the competing minutes of the two returning players.
Regarding his recovery, Green said,
“I’m not all the way where I want to be, but it’s a step in the right direction.”
Challenges Ahead for Phoenix Suns Despite Returning Players
The Suns’ three-point shooting fell short once again, finishing 11-for-46 (24%) from beyond the arc. This occurred in the first game without sharpshooter Grayson Allen, who suffered a knee sprain on Thursday and will be re-evaluated after the All-Star break. Despite imperfections in their offense, coach Ott refused to let the return of Booker and Green be used as an excuse, stating,
“Anytime you get two players like that back to your lineup, we’re not gonna complain.”
Brooks highlighted areas for improvement, particularly on defense, noting that Phoenix needs to improve their closeouts on shooters, rim protection, and rebounding. The Suns were out-rebounded 50-40 in the game, which contributed to their inability to take control despite opportunities.
Phoenix, currently holding the seventh seed in the Western Conference, trails the Minnesota Timberwolves by just one game. They will face the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday and the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday in their final two games before the All-Star break.
Looking Forward to the Suns’ Upcoming Matches
With the return of key players Devin Booker and Jalen Green, the Suns hope to find more consistency as they approach a crucial stretch of the season. The team’s rough shooting and defensive lapses revealed in this loss underscore the challenges they face in maintaining their playoff positioning. Their upcoming home games offer an opportunity to build momentum as they look to close the gap on the Timberwolves in the Western Conference standings.
