Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey will not rejoin the lineup until after the NBA All-Star break, as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury sustained on January 28. Head coach Billy Donovan confirmed Giddey is expected to miss Wednesday’s game against the Boston Celtics amid ongoing rehabilitation efforts.
Donovan stated,
“I don’t anticipate Josh or Tre [Jones] playing Wednesday against Boston, but both guys are ramping up,”
and added,
“They’re playing three-on-three, and they’re running up the court. I think the medical guys just want them to be in a place where there’s at least enough of a buildup and all that tightness has kind of subsided.”
Impact of Giddey’s Absence on Bulls’ Performance
Giddey has been sidelined for over three weeks due to a recurring hamstring strain, initially causing him to miss time in January before re-aggravating the injury late that month. His continued absence has put extra strain on Chicago’s offense, which has struggled without his all-around contributions. When Giddey plays, the Bulls maintain an even 17-17 record, but without him, they have fallen to 7-13.
The Bulls’ rising star currently averages a career-best 18.6 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game, shooting .462 from the field, .366 beyond the arc, and .775 at the free-throw line. Alongside Nikola Jokic and Jalen Johnson, Giddey is one of only three players in the NBA averaging at least 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists this season.
Team Adjustments Amid Guard Injuries and New Additions
Alongside Giddey, guard Tre Jones has also been out since January 22 with his own hamstring injury. Jones has contributed 12.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 5.8 assists on efficient shooting splits in 38 appearances. While both await their returns, the Bulls have relied on recent guard acquisitions such as Anfernee Simons, Jaden Ivey, and Colin Sexton to fill the backcourt role.
Chicago’s backcourt has seen increased minutes from these new additions in recent games, including losses to the Denver Nuggets and Brooklyn Nets, as Donovan manages rotations with five capable guards vying for playing time once Giddey and Jones are back in action.
Looking Ahead: What the Return of Giddey Means for Chicago
The anticipated return of Josh Giddey and Tre Jones after the All-Star break is expected to provide a critical boost for the Bulls as they seek to improve their record and strengthen their postseason prospects. Integrating these key players back into a lineup already adjusting to new guard personnel will be a balancing act for Donovan, though Giddey’s versatile performance offers hope for more consistent offensive production and team success moving forward.
