Lakers Poised to Overpay for Top Free Agent Walker Kessler

The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing to use their salary cap flexibility to pursue major free agents this offseason, with Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz emerging as a primary target. Having been linked to Kessler for some time, the Lakers are now expected to aggressively chase the rim-protecting center in free agency this summer, aiming to strengthen their roster.

Although the Lakers previously attempted to trade for Kessler during the season, the current expectation is that they will focus on signing him outright. Multiple sources, including NBA insider Evan Sidery, have highlighted growing interest from the Lakers in acquiring Kessler during free agency. With the Jazz not extending Kessler’s contract earlier and preparing to enter restricted free agency, questions remain over whether Utah will match any offer Lakers make.

Renewed Speculation Surrounding Lakers’ Free Agent Strategy

Interest in Walker Kessler has intensified following Utah’s acquisition of Jaren Jackson Jr., which sparked fresh rumors about Kessler possibly moving this offseason. The Lakers, who have estimated cap space between $48 million and $55 million, are positioned to present a lucrative offer that could challenge the Jazz’s ability to retain him. Analysts including Tim McMahon and Brian Windhorst of ESPN’s The Hoop Collective podcast consider Los Angeles a realistic destination for Kessler.

Restricted free agency creates complications, but Windhorst noted a particular scenario where

“There’s one narrow lane on the far left of the highway. If you’re deemed a ‘gettable’ restricted free agent — meaning teams believe your current team can’t match — you can sometimes get way overpaid.”

This potential for an overpay fits the Lakers’ available cap room and their desire to secure an elite shot blocker.

Kessler remains sidelined for the rest of the 2025-26 season due to shoulder surgery but is still highly valued for his defensive impact. A general manager shared that

“There aren’t a whole lot of traditional free-agent races anymore, the way to do things now is you trade for the guy, then you extend him,”

but added that the situation regarding Kessler is quite different.

“You’ve got teams with needs and cap space, ready to give a big offer, you have got the Jazz trying to manage their own situation. So it’s really wide open.”

Los Angeles Also Targeting Promising Forward Peyton Watson

Alongside Kessler, the Lakers have shown interest in restricted free agent Peyton Watson of the Denver Nuggets. Watson, an L.A.-area native and UCLA alumnus, has performed strongly this season, benefitting from Denver’s injury challenges. Entering the final year of his rookie contract, Watson represents another potential key addition for the Lakers.

ESPN analyst Kevin Pelton pointed out that the Lakers face restrictions around waiting periods in restricted free agency, noting,

“Restricted free agency is trickier for a team such as the Lakers that can’t afford to wait out the matching period, but Denver Nuggets forward Peyton Watson — an L.A.-area native who played at UCLA — might be gettable via sign-and-trade because of Denver’s tax situation.”

Brian Windhorst highlighted Watson’s importance for the Lakers’ future, stating,

“I would say Peyton Watson is trying to get into that lane in Denver. If you’re a Lakers fan thinking about how to use cap space, that’s a guy to watch.”

Meanwhile, CBS’s Sam Quinn expressed skepticism regarding the Lakers’ ability to secure both targets, commenting,

“I think getting one *might* be doable, but I’m dubious. You have $50 million or so in space (maybe there’s a Vando dump, maybe Smart and Ayton opt out, but 50 is the rough starting point). I don’t think a $25ish million starting point steals either. Would have to overpay one.”

Roster Uncertainty and Long-Term Planning Beyond Current Stars

With future moves hinging on the status of LeBron James, who may depart the team in the near future, Los Angeles is expected to offer Austin Reaves a substantial contract extension to secure a core alongside Luka Doncic. Outside of this duo, much of the Lakers’ roster remains unsettled.

The front office has emphasized its focus on players who align well with the star pairing’s needs, making Walker Kessler and Peyton Watson critical names to monitor as the offseason progresses. Their potential acquisitions could reshape the Lakers’ defense and versatility as they seek to remain competitive in the coming seasons.
