MINNEAPOLIS — Quentin Grimes displayed his offensive prowess once again as he contributed 19 points and seven assists in the Philadelphia 76ers’ commanding 135-108 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Target Center on Sunday night. This performance was a crucial element in the Sixers’ rebound, especially in games missing key players like Joel Embiid and Paul George. Grimes emphasized his desire to maintain a constant offensive presence throughout the rest of the season, aiming to remain in “attack mode” regardless of his teammates on the floor.
Supporting Role Grows Amid Team Challenges
Grimes’ emergence as a vital scorer and playmaker complements the efforts of backcourt teammates Tyrese Maxey, who posted 39 points and eight assists, and VJ Edgecombe, who added 24 points alongside seven rebounds. With the Sixers struggling on the bench scoring—currently ranked 28th in the NBA with an average of 30.6 points per game—Grimes’ consistent aggression could provide an important boost for Philadelphia’s second unit as they navigate through Injuries and suspensions.
Embracing Consistency and Offensive Aggression
Grimes has made clear his strategy of sticking to his strengths to generate positive results.
“If I kind of just stick to my game, stick to who I am, good things happen,”
he said from his locker after the Timberwolves game. His performance included a strong three-point shooting display, knocking down five of eight attempts, with critical shots in the first half and a key fourth-quarter three-pointer that helped extend the Sixers’ lead significantly. Besides scoring, Grimes contributed dynamic playmaking, including assists to center Adem Bona and a highlight alley-oop to Edgecombe during a fast break.

Versatility in Lineups Gains Coach’s Approval
Sixers head coach Nick Nurse praised Grimes’ ability to handle various roles and positions during extended stretches of play, particularly highlighting his fluidity within evolving lineups. Grimes finished the first half Sunday in a small-ball unit featuring three guards and Dominick Barlow at center, showcasing his adaptability on the court.
“It looks like he’s settling back into the role we had him in earlier,”
Nurse commented following the game.
Overcoming Early Season Inconsistencies
While moments of brilliance have marked Grimes’ first full season in Philadelphia, inconsistencies have persisted, partly due to his delayed signing of a one-year qualifying offer amidst a complicated restricted free agency period. Although early in the season, Grimes appeared to be a strong candidate for Sixth Man of the Year due to his athleticism and scoring ability, he has struggled through shooting slumps and occasional defensive lapses resulting in fouls. Up to Sunday, his season averages stood at 12.7 points on 43.9% shooting, with 3.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 0.9 steals across 50 games.
Balancing Role with Team’s Star-Studded Lineup
Grimes faces challenges carving out consistent opportunities with the presence of star players like Embiid, George, and Maxey, especially with rookie Edgecombe rising as a starter ahead of him in the rotation. Nurse has expressed a clear intention to structure Grimes’ involvement more deliberately by targeting specific shot attempts rather than relying on the Sixers’ often unpredictable offensive sets. Maxey has encouraged Grimes to increase his perimeter shooting volume, urging him to take six or seven three-point attempts per game instead of hesitating with pump fakes or drives when open on the outside.
Focused Improvements Through Film Study
Grimes dedicates time before games in the locker room working with player development coach TJ DiLeo, analyzing defensive gaps and refining his shot selection. Nurse praised Grimes’ capacity for creating space off the dribble and successfully shooting over defenders’ outstretched arms.
“He can get them off anytime he wants,”
Nurse said.
“We are working on kind of getting him situations where, ‘Hey, we’re going to get you the ball, and we need you to shake your guy down and shoot the ball here.’ We’re just going to continue to encourage him.”
Renewed Focus After All-Star Break
After the All-Star break, which Grimes spent relaxing with family in Cabo, he returned rejuvenated with a renewed commitment to an aggressive offensive mindset. While his first two games post-break showed promise, Sunday’s game against Minnesota represented the full energy and spark the Sixers will need while stars Embiid and George remain unavailable. Grimes acknowledged the importance of sustaining his approach when key players return:
“I’ve got to just figure out my spots. … When guys come back, there can’t be no drop-off.”
