John Tonje Reflects on Celtics Debut and New Beginnings

John Tonje did not anticipate being traded at the NBA trade deadline when the Boston Celtics acquired him in the deal that sent Chris Boucher to the Utah Jazz. Despite the surprise, Tonje recognized the business realities behind such moves as he transitioned to his new team.

Selected as a second-round pick in this year’s NBA Draft shortly after the Celtics chose Amari Williams, Tonje joined Boston on a two-way contract. The Celtics have since signed him to a 10-day contract, allowing him to further adapt to his new environment while benefiting from the franchise’s strong player development system.

Tonje Embraces Boston’s Development Program and Growth

Throughout his adjustment, Tonje has appreciated the Celtics’ focus on player improvement.

“The player development here is amazing,”

he shared with MassLive after a game in Denver.

“Came here and instantly kind of set a plan. We’ve been getting after it ever since. I feel like I’m in a great place. Improving each day. Getting to know everyone, so it’s been awesome.”

In 34 games split between the Maine Celtics and the Salt Lake City Stars this season, Tonje has posted averages of 18.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.0 steals over 30.5 minutes per contest, showcasing his ability to contribute on multiple fronts.

Collegiate Success Laid Foundation for Professional Career

Tonje spent four years at Colorado State before transferring to the University of Missouri, and ultimately completing his final NCAA season at the University of Wisconsin. His time with the Badgers left a lasting impression, as he quickly became a fan favorite.

During the 2024-25 season, Tonje earned All-American Second Team honors and set a Wisconsin NCAA Tournament scoring record by tallying 37 points against BYU in March 2024.

Enjoying the Celtics Experience and Learning Quickly

The 24-year-old guard, hailing from Nebraska and an AAU teammate of Baylor Scheierman, is enthusiastic about this fresh chapter in Boston. “It’s been great,” Tonje said.

“Trying to learn on the fly. Learn everything I can. It’s been cool to be around the people in this program. A lot of high-character people, talent. I’m just really trying to make the most of it.”

Tonje made his NBA debut during Boston’s 97-81 win against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday. Although he is expected to remain with the Celtics on a two-way contract following his 10-day deal, this setup offers continued opportunities for him to develop within an elite professional framework.

Focus Remains on Contributing to Team Success

Tonje emphasized his aim to improve in all facets of the game. “Overall improvement,” he stated.

“Offensively and defensively. Find a way to impact winning is the main thing — however that might look. It’s different from game to game. Really just trying to impact winning.”

As Tonje adapts to life with the Celtics, his growth is likely to be closely watched by fans and coaches alike, with his progress offering promise for Boston’s future roster depth and on-court competitiveness.
