During his rookie season with the San Antonio Spurs, Dylan Harper has not posted standout individual stats but has emerged as an important component of a dynamic trio alongside Stephon Castle and De’Aron Fox. This collaboration has contributed significantly to the Spurs’ success this season. Harper expressed confidence in their collective abilities, emphasizing how their teamwork creates difficult matchups for opponents.
Harper stated,
“It’s hard to scout us, with three dynamic guards. I think when Fox and Steph start the game, we’ve got two of the best guards in the NBA,”
and added,
“And I think when I come off the bench, I think that’s just another weapon we have. So, I think it opens the floor for everyone, including for Vic. And I think when Vic has all that pressure on him and two people go to him, it just opens the world for us.”
Currently averaging 11 points per game, Harper ranks seventh in scoring on the Spurs, while playing approximately 22 minutes each night. In comparison, Castle, last season’s Rookie of the Year, averages 16.6 points in nearly 30 minutes per game. Fox, a two-time NBA All-Star, leads the team with 19 points in just over 31 minutes per outing.
Harper further praised the team’s offensive depth, noting,
“I think that from everywhere we all can score. That’s the beauty of this team. We all can dribble the ball,”
and continued,
“We have a bunch of ball handlers and a bunch of scorers. So, every night is going to be a big night, just for us as a collective group, just to come and help out however we can, it’s great for us.”
Victor Wembanyama Commends Castle’s Defensive Impact
Among the Spurs’ guard duo and Harper, each player offers unique skills. Fox stands out as the top scorer, Harper excels in attacking the basket, and Castle is regarded as the premier defender of the group. Victor Wembanyama praised Castle’s progress and role within the team, noting how his defensive contributions elevate their game plan.
Wembanyama remarked,
“He’s understood his role very well,”
and added,
“The level he’s playing at is really unseen for a second-year player and how it fits in our game plan.”
Together, Wembanyama and Castle, nicknamed “Area 51” due to their jersey numbers and Wembanyama’s “Alien” nickname, combine to form a formidable defensive unit. Wembanyama emphasized their objective of disrupting opposing offenses, highlighting the difficulty opponents face dealing with their defense.

He said,
“I know we make it hard, we make it uncomfortable for people to play against us,”
further explaining,
“That’s the goal because a guy has to dribble around one of the best on-ball defenders and then has to go shoot a shot against some of the best rim protectors; it’s very tough.”
Harper Embraces Spurs’ Rising Fortunes This Season
As other rookies like Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel vie for Rookie of the Year recognition, Dylan Harper is carving out a crucial role that will likely keep him active into the postseason. Reflecting on the Spurs’ current trajectory, Harper expressed satisfaction with how the team is performing and their ongoing winning streak.
Harper shared,
“I think this is the most I’ve won in a long time. So, just having this winning streak and just building off of that and not taking teams for granted, I think, is a big thing for us.”
Thanks to the contributions of Harper, Fox, and Castle, the Spurs have secured the second seed in the Western Conference, trailing only the Oklahoma City Thunder. Their strong standing reflects their collective effort and the promising chemistry of their young core.
