Stephon Castle Bio
Stephon Javonte Castle (born November 1, 2004) is an American professional basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the UConn Huskies, winning a national championship in 2024. He was a consensus five-star recruit and one of the top players in the 2023 class. Castle was named the NBA Rookie of the Year for the 2024–25 season.
Early Life and Background
Stephon Castle grew up in Covington, Georgia, where he attended Newton High School. During his junior year, he averaged 16.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. In his senior year, he improved his performance, finishing with averages of 20.1 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists, three steals, and two blocks per game, leading the Rams to the Class 7A state quarterfinals. Castle’s talent was recognized when he was selected to play in the 2023 McDonald’s All-American Boys Game during his senior year.
Path to Basketball
Initially rated as a four-star recruit by most recruiting services, Castle committed to playing college basketball for the University of Connecticut (UConn) during his junior year, choosing UConn over offers from several other schools, including Auburn and Ohio State. Breakthrough (2024–Present)
On June 26, 2024, Castle was selected with the fourth overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2024 NBA draft. He signed with the Spurs on July 2, 2024, and made his NBA Summer League debut on July 6, where he scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out three assists. Castle’s rookie season was marked by significant achievements, including being named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month for January 2025. On February 7, 2025, he scored a career-high 33 points in a close game against the Charlotte Hornets. In April 2025, he was again recognized as the Western Conference Rookie of the Month, culminating in being awarded the NBA Rookie of the Year on April 29, 2025.
