The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the New York Knicks 110-97 on Sunday without LeBron James, who was sidelined due to a left elbow contusion and arthritis in his left foot. The team relied heavily on Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, whose offensive performances, along with strong defensive effort, propelled the Lakers to the win.
Stifling Defense Controls Knicks’ Potent Offense
The Lakers held the Knicks, who possess the NBA’s third-best offense, to just 42.7% shooting and forced 19 turnovers, limiting them to 20 points below their usual scoring average. This defensive discipline was a key factor in maintaining control throughout the game.
“We definitely need to be a better defensive team, and I think we’re showing that we can do it,”
said Doncic.
Coach JJ Redick praised the team’s defensive intensity, highlighting how multiple players, including Doncic, Austin Reaves, and Marcus Smart, sacrificed their bodies by taking charges to deter the Knicks’ drives to the basket.
Redick described these efforts as “sacrificial plays,” explaining,
You got to put your body on the line. Our guys have been motivated to do that all year.
Doncic and Reaves Lead Lakers’ Offense
Offensively, Luka Doncic was the top scorer with 35 points, complemented by eight rebounds and two steals. Austin Reaves notched 25 points alongside five assists and three steals, marking only his third 20-plus point game since recovering from a left calf strain in early February.

Reaves reflected on his approach since joining the Lakers, stating,
When I got here … just told myself to have fun, I don’t feel like I’ve played bad [recently]. I just haven’t made a lot of shots and I feel like I’ve done a lot of other things well.
The Lakers have improved to 9-2 this season in games where both Reaves and Doncic have played together without LeBron James.
Doncic spoke highly of Reaves’ contribution, saying,
It’s just great being his teammate. Obviously, he needs to be aggressive like this, but just, playing with him is so easy, because he draws so much attention, helps others too. So, just playing with him, it makes my life easy.
Rare Win Against a Strong Opponent Without James
Sunday’s victory was one of few positive outings for the Lakers against difficult competition, as they had gone just 4-12 against teams holding a winning percentage of .600 or better prior to this matchup. The Knicks entered the game with a 41-24 record and fresh off a commanding 142-103 win over the Denver Nuggets, featuring their star player Nikola Jokic.
Rui Hachimura, who started in place of James and scored 13 points, said,
We kind of took it personal, I think, and then we got this dub. So, that was a great team win.
Upcoming Challenging Schedule for the Lakers
The Lakers face a demanding stretch ahead, with four of their next five games against tough opponents including the Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, and the Houston Rockets twice. This period will test their ability to maintain momentum without LeBron James.
Coach Redick remained measured about the recent win’s significance, noting,
I’m not in a position where I can overreact. You guys [in the media] do that. The fans rightfully so should always overreact. It’s what makes fandom so awesome. … My job is not to overreact. We’re 15-9 in our last 24. We’re a top-10 offense and a top-15 defense. That’s what we wanted to be coming into the season with this group, and that’s where our group is right now.
Looking Forward to Sustaining Competitiveness Amid James’ Injury
Without LeBron James due to injury, the Lakers are leaning on players like Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves to lead both offensively and defensively. Sunday’s strong performance boosts hope that they can overcome upcoming challenges and remain competitive. The upcoming schedule will be crucial in determining whether this victory signals a turning point for the team.
