The Minnesota Timberwolves are navigating a critical phase in the Western Conference playoff race while unexpectedly finding attention drawn to the ongoing World Baseball Classic. On Tuesday night, as the Timberwolves prepare to face the Los Angeles Lakers in Los Angeles, another significant sporting event unfolds in Houston—Italy versus the U.S. in the baseball tournament. The intriguing crossover stems from the Timberwolves’ assistant coach Micah Nori’s son, Dante Nori, who is making a notable impact for Italy in the competition. This unique situation has created a blend of focus on the Timberwolves NBA playoff push alongside enthusiasm for the baseball spectacle.
Italy versus U.S. Clash Captivates Timberwolves Organization
The World Baseball Classic game between Italy and the U.S. commands attention within the Timberwolves’ camp due to Dante Nori’s breakout performances. Despite the intensity of the NBA season, the organization and staff members, including head coach Chris Finch and co-owner Alex Rodriguez—a former baseball superstar—are engaged in supporting Dante’s efforts on the international stage. Micah Nori expressed how much the team and his family are invested in the tournament with many sending messages and video clips of Dante’s games.
“I will be watching the Timberwolves,”
Micah Nori said.
But at 6 o’clock Pacific time, I will be focused on the Italians and the Americans in the WBC, for sure.

My family is obviously locked in on it, but so is our organization,
Micah Nori added.
It sounds crazy, but so many guys are locked in. Our head coach is a big fan, and I can’t tell you how many people send videos or pictures of them watching Dante’s game. It means a lot. It is a welcome distraction, if you will, one that has you just get away from the grind a little bit.
Dante Nori’s Journey from Youth Baseball to International Spotlight
Dante Nori has seized the opportunity at the World Baseball Classic, boasting impressive stats including a two-homer game that helped Italy defeat Brazil. His rise to this stage traces back to early childhood, when his father, Micah, steered him away from basketball and towards baseball. Dante’s own realization around middle school, when he recognized physical limitations in basketball, led him to fully embrace baseball.
“It was a very easy choice,”
Dante Nori said.
Just keep the cleats on and play baseball.
Wearing the Italia jersey carries deep family pride, symbolizing their heritage and honoring his grandfather Fred Nori, who played college and minor league baseball. This family’s roots are steeped in baseball tradition, contrasting with Micah Nori’s eventual career in professional basketball coaching.
The Nori Family’s Athletic Legacy and Basketball Connections
Baseball runs through the Nori bloodline: Fred Nori, Dante’s grandfather, competed in college and minor league levels, while Micah played baseball at Indiana University, achieving a .365 batting average as a senior. Though Micah transitioned into basketball scouting and coaching, his family maintained its strong baseball identity. This blend of sports within the family highlights a unique dynamic, especially given the Timberwolves’ present NBA playoff ambitions.
Being around all these great NBA players your whole life, it helps you out listening to them, seeing their work ethic, seeing what they had to do to get there,
Dante Nori said.
And then the standpoint of getting to rep that name — Italia — across your chest, you’re playing for your ancestors, you’re playing for your family, especially my grandpa Fred. Him getting to watch is really special. All of that, it’s just all coming together. It’s sweet.
Mentorship from Alex Rodriguez Bridges Sports Worlds
The intersection of baseball and basketball within the Timberwolves organization is personified by co-owner Alex Rodriguez, a former 14-time MLB All-Star and three-time MVP. A-Rod’s presence has been invaluable for Dante, offering guidance and support, especially during visits to Minnesota. Micah Nori noted how Rodriguez’s encouragement and advice have influenced Dante’s mindset, helping him remain focused amid the pressures of performing at the World Baseball Classic.
Alex has been great the few times that Dante and he have crossed paths when Dante was in Minnesota, even when he was in high school,
Micah Nori said.
Alex is always taking time to give Dante some advice. And I think that’s been huge. Just the fact that Dante has been fortunate enough to grow up in professional locker rooms, he realizes that they’re just people but he sees the work ethic. And that’s why I think he gets to the WBC and just focuses on playing his game. He’s not distracted or overwhelmed by it all.
Future Outlook: Playoffs and Beyond
As the Timberwolves continue their pursuit of a favorable seed in the NBA playoffs, the organization’s support for Dante Nori in the World Baseball Classic offers a refreshing human element amidst the intense competition. This convergence of basketball determination and baseball heritage reflects a multifaceted sports culture within the team. Moving forward, the Timberwolves remain committed to their playoff quest, while the Nori family’s representation in international baseball shines as a source of pride and inspiration for everyone involved.
