The Pittsburgh Steelers have appointed Robert Kugler as their new tight ends coach, marking a strategic addition to head coach Mike McCarthy’s inaugural coaching team. This hire takes place on Thursday and represents the Steelers’ decision to bring in a promising young coach who previously served as an assistant offensive line coach with the New England Patriots.
Kugler’s Path Through the NFL Coaching Ranks
Robert Kugler joined the Patriots’ coaching staff in 2024 under head coach Jerod Mayo, working closely with offensive line coach Scott Peters and assistant Michael McCarthy. When Mike Vrabel assumed the Patriots’ head coaching role last season, Kugler was one of three coaching staff members retained, alongside Ben McAdoo and Jeremy Springer.
During the current season, Kugler collaborated with offensive line coach Doug Marrone and assistant Jason Houghtaling. Before joining New England, Kugler spent two seasons with the Carolina Panthers, and he began his NFL coaching career in 2021 with the Houston Texans.
Personal Connections and Career Growth
This new role with the Steelers carries a personal significance for Kugler, whose father, Sean Kugler, coached the Steelers’ offensive line from 2010 to 2012. Additionally, Robert Kugler played high school football in Pennsylvania at North Allegheny before continuing his athletic and academic career at Purdue.
Wider Changes Within the Patriots Organization
Robert Kugler’s departure is part of broader coaching staff adjustments for the Patriots, who are also preparing to hire a new defensive coordinator amid recent transitions. These changes reflect the evolving leadership approach under Mike Vrabel’s direction.
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ decision to hire Kugler underscores their commitment to infusing fresh coaching perspectives while drawing on NFL experience connected to well-established teams like the Patriots and Panthers.
