INDIANAPOLIS — As the Dallas Cowboys embark on improving their defense under new coordinator Christian Parker, Nakobe Dean has surfaced as a prime candidate for the inside linebacker role. The former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker, now an unrestricted free agent, is expected to be a key signing for the Cowboys as they seek to bolster their lineup.
Dean, a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, appeared in 10 games last season after returning from a significant knee injury suffered in the previous year’s playoffs. His standout year came in 2024, when he recorded a career-high 128 tackles. With Parker’s familiarity from their time together in Philadelphia and the belief that Dean fits a 3-4 defensive scheme, the Cowboys see him as a potential middle linebacker cornerstone moving forward.
Recent Linebacker Struggles Highlight Need for Stability
The Cowboys’ linebacker spot, particularly at the middle position, has lacked consistency since the retirement of Leighton Vander Esch, who stepped away after the 2023 season due to neck issues. Previous defensive coordinators Matt Eberflus and Mike Zimmer favored veteran middle linebackers for their 4-3 systems, signing Eric Kendricks and Jack Sanborn, respectively. Kendricks led the team with 138 tackles in 2024, while Sanborn struggled with performance and health, eventually replaced by Kenneth Murray who was playing out of position.

Other recent moves included acquiring Logan Wilson from Cincinnati at the 2024 trade deadline, but Wilson saw limited action before his release after the 2025 season. This ongoing churn underscores the pressing need for a steady presence at inside linebacker under Parker’s 3-4 defense.
Leadership Aims to Address Personnel Challenges Quickly
We got to improve on the personnel side and it’s going to take a lot of work,
Cowboys co-owner Stephen Jones said during the NFL scouting combine.
It seems like it’s Line 1, get someone to execute (the defensive coordinator’s) defenses,
he added, emphasizing the importance of a capable middle linebacker to anchor the defense.
The Cowboys are hopeful that signing Dean to a multi-year deal can restore stability to this crucial role, complementing the coaching staff’s approach in building a defense tailored to Parker’s vision.
Adjustments to Linebacker Roles and Defensive Scheme
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed that linebacker personnel decisions will evolve this offseason. Inside linebacker Marist Liufau and defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku are transitioning to outside linebacker roles in the base 3-4 formation. Liufau, a 2024 third-round pick, has struggled to secure consistent playing time, and the move may allow him to bulk up and thrive on the edge.
Ezeiruaku, a 2025 second-round pick, impressed the Cowboys with his run-stopping capabilities despite originally being drafted as a defensive end. Parker prefers larger defensive ends for the line, envisioning players like Quinnen Williams, who weighs 303 pounds, fitting that position. Ezeiruaku, at 6-foot-2 and 248 pounds, is being repositioned accordingly.
Young Players Show Potential Amid Injury Setbacks
DeMarvion Overshown is another linebacker expected to see increased responsibility, though his progress has been slowed by surgeries on both knees. Now entering a contract year, Overshown is motivated to stay healthy and produce strong performances to secure a new deal with the Cowboys.
He’s excited about an offseason for the first time in a while,
Schottenheimer noted about Overshown.
Which is what young players need. Certainly guys as talented as he is. Again, we’ve got some guys that we’re excited about that are young.
Opening of Free Agency Marks First Step Toward Defensive Overhaul
The Cowboys will start formal discussions with free agents on March 9, with the Carolina signing of Nakobe Dean representing a crucial first move to rebuild a defense that struggled mightily last season. Despite concerns about his size — Dean stands 5-foot-11 and weighs 231 pounds — Parker considers Dean’s skills ideal for the role and has confidence in his ability to lead the inside linebacker group.
I think as we go through this process, we’ll see how free agency goes,
Schottenheimer said.
That’s the first line of action, if you will, as we go through this process. But again, I see it being built with some veterans and some young players.
Looking Ahead: Potential Stability and Defensive Growth
If the Cowboys successfully sign Dean, the team could experience a much-needed boost in consistency and leadership at inside linebacker. The folding of younger talents like Overshown, the repositioning of players like Liufau and Ezeiruaku, and the integration of experienced veterans will all play vital roles in Parker’s remodeled defense. With an intense offseason ahead, the Cowboys appear ready to address key defensive personnel challenges and aim for improved performance in the upcoming NFL season.
