Aaron Jones Set for Release by Minnesota Vikings This Month

After two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, running back Aaron Jones is expected to be released as the new league year begins this month. This development comes after the Vikings informed Jones and defensive tackle Javon Hargrave that, unless traded, they will be cut from the team, a move that will save Minnesota $7.75 million in salary cap space.

Jones’ Journey from Green Bay to Minnesota and His Performance

Originally a key player for the Green Bay Packers, Aaron Jones was released shortly after the team signed Josh Jacobs two years ago, despite fans’ hopes for a dynamic duo in the backfield. After his departure from Green Bay, Jones joined the Vikings and delivered a career-best performance in 2024 with 1,138 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. In addition, he contributed 408 receiving yards and two touchdowns through the air.

In 2025, however, injuries limited Jones to just 12 games, reducing his impact to 548 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, 199 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown. His diminished playtime last season has contributed to the Vikings’ decision to move on from him.

Implications for the Green Bay Packers’ Running Back Situation

The potential release of Jones has stirred speculation among Packers fans about a possible reunion with Josh Jacobs. However, the reality appears more complex. Green Bay recently declined to offer running back Emanuel Wilson a $3.5 million contract, signaling a cautious approach to running back contracts. Given this, it seems improbable that the Packers would bring back Jones on terms more favorable than what they offered Wilson.

Additional Updates in Wisconsin Football

The Packers have also finalized their plans regarding Emanuel Wilson’s future on the team. Meanwhile, quarterback Jordan Love has embarked on a lengthy 6,000-mile vacation coinciding with the NFL Combine. The Packers recently added a Super Bowl champion to their roster just days after an unexpected resignation from the team.

This month’s moves could reshape the running back landscape for both Minnesota and Green Bay as they adjust their rosters for the upcoming season. Aaron Jones’ release marks a significant shift for the Vikings’ backfield strategy and leaves open questions about his next destination in the NFL.
