Jordan Love Bio
Jordan Alexander Love is an American professional football quarterback for the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League (NFL). Born on November 2, 1998, in Bakersfield, California, he excelled at Liberty High School before gaining recognition at Utah State University. Love was drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Packers and has since shown potential as a starting quarterback, leading the team to notable playoff appearances and securing a significant contract extension ahead of the 2024 season.
Early Life and Background
Jordan Alexander Love was born in Bakersfield, California, on November 2, 1998. His father, Orbin Love Jr., worked as a police officer for the Bakersfield Police Department, while his mother, Anna Love, worked for the California Highway Patrol. Love is biracial; his mother is white and his father was Black. Jordan and his father shared a close bond, and Orbin Jr. coached many of his son’s youth sports teams.
Tragedy struck the family when Orbin Jr. died by suicide at a time when Jordan was a teenager, prompting the young athlete to briefly consider leaving football. His mother encouraged him to continue playing for at least one more year to make sure he was not making a hasty choice. Love attended Liberty High School in Bakersfield, where he grew significantly before becoming the varsity starting quarterback midway through his junior year. As a senior, he passed for 2,148 yards and 24 touchdowns and rushed for 806 yards and eight touchdowns, leading Liberty to the state semifinals.
Path to the NFL
A two-star recruit coming out of high school, Love received his only Division I FBS scholarship offer from Utah State University. He chose the Aggies over several FCS programs and redshirted his first year in 2016. Between his freshman year of high school and his first year of college, Love grew nine inches and gained roughly 80 pounds, transforming his frame into that of a prototypical NFL quarterback. As a freshman in 2017, he appeared in 12 games and started the final six, earning Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week honors after his debut at UNLV.
Love’s breakout came during his sophomore season in 2018, when he started all 13 games and set a Utah State season record with 3,567 passing yards, throwing 32 touchdowns against six interceptions. He was named the MVP of the 2018 New Mexico Bowl after passing for 359 yards and four touchdowns, leading the Aggies to an 11-2 finish and a No. 22 ranking in the AP poll. His junior season in 2019 was more uneven under a new coaching staff, with his interception total rising to 17. Still, he declared for the 2020 NFL Draft and finished his college career with 8,600 passing yards, 60 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions.
Jordan Love Career
Early Career (2020-2022)
The Green Bay Packers traded up with the Miami Dolphins to select Love with the 26th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, making him the first player from a Group of Five conference chosen in that draft. The decision stunned analysts because the Packers already had reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers on their roster. Love signed a fully guaranteed rookie contract worth more than $12.3 million, including a signing bonus above $6.5 million, becoming the first 26th pick to receive such a deal under the modern rookie pay scale. He spent his entire rookie season as an inactive third-string quarterback while Green Bay went 13-3 and reached the NFC Championship Game.
Love saw his first regular-season action in 2021, completing six of eight passes in relief of Rodgers during a Week 1 loss to the New Orleans Saints. He made his first NFL start on November 7, 2021, against the Kansas City Chiefs, finishing 19 of 34 for 190 yards with one interception and his first career touchdown pass to Allen Lazard. As the primary backup in 2022, Love appeared in three games, including a relief outing against the Philadelphia Eagles in which he posted a 146.8 passer rating and threw a long touchdown to Christian Watson.
NFL Starting Breakthrough (2023)
Following Aaron Rodgers’ trade to the New York Jets in 2023, the Packers named Love their starting quarterback. He opened the season by throwing for 245 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-20 win over the Chicago Bears, becoming just the third different Week 1 starting quarterback for Green Bay since 1993. Love then led his first fourth-quarter comeback win, an 18-17 victory over the New Orleans Saints after the Packers had trailed 17-0. He later eclipsed 300 passing yards for the first time in a 23-20 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, and on Thanksgiving Day he threw for 268 yards and three scores in a 29-22 upset of the Detroit Lions.
Love closed the regular season with 4,159 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, completing 64.2 percent of his throws. In his playoff debut against the No. 2 seed Dallas Cowboys, he passed for 272 yards and three touchdowns and posted a 157.2 passer rating, leading the No. 7-seeded Packers to a 48-32 win and making them the first seventh seed in NFL history to win a playoff game. Green Bay’s run ended the following week with a 24-21 loss to the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers.
Green Bay Packers Era (2024-Present)
In July 2024, Love signed a four-year, $220 million contract extension with the Packers, including a $75 million signing bonus and $155 million in guarantees. The deal tied him for the highest average annual value in the league at the time of signing. He opened the 2024 season by passing for 260 yards and two touchdowns in the NFL’s first game in Brazil, a 34-29 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in which he suffered an MCL sprain. After missing two games, Love returned and threw for a career-high 389 yards with four touchdowns in a narrow loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He finished the regular season with at least one interception in eight straight games before going the last seven without one, helping the Packers clinch a Wild Card berth. Green Bay’s season ended with a 22-10 loss to the Eagles in the Wild Card round.
Love and the Packers began the 2025 NFL season with decisive wins over the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders. After a Week 4 tie with the Dallas Cowboys in which he threw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns, Love led wins over the Cincinnati Bengals and Arizona Cardinals. In a Sunday Night Football victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, he completed 20 consecutive passes, tying Brett Favre’s team record while also facing Aaron Rodgers for the first time. On Thanksgiving Day, Love passed for 234 yards and four touchdowns in a 31-24 win over the Detroit Lions, earning NFC Offensive Player of the Week.
Notable Events and Milestones
Love’s playoff debut against the Dallas Cowboys stands among the most memorable performances of his career, as he delivered a near-perfect 157.2 passer rating to lead the Packers to a historic win as the first No. 7 seed to win a postseason game. His record-tying 20 consecutive completions against the Pittsburgh Steelers underscored his accuracy and growth as a young starter, while his NFC Offensive Player of the Week award on Thanksgiving 2025 added another milestone to his resume.
