The Chicago Bears are preparing for a significant change on their offensive line with center Drew Dalman planning to retire after five seasons in the NFL, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Tuesday. Dalman’s retirement announcement was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who confirmed Dalman informed the Bears directly of his decision.
In response, the Bears are exploring options to fill the vacancy, bringing in center Tyler Biadasz, recently released by the Washington Commanders, for a visit. While Biadasz is a possible replacement, Chicago’s front office, led by GM Ryan Poles, is expected to be highly diligent in maintaining the strength of their offensive line, especially after prioritizing protection for quarterback Caleb Williams during last year’s free agency period.
Dalman’s Role in Chicago’s Offensive Line Improvement
At just 27 years old, Drew Dalman was a pivotal part of the Bears’ offensive line overhaul last season. Signing a three-year contract, he joined seasoned additions Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson as key newcomers. The addition of these powerful players played a major role in bolstering the Bears’ front line.
Dalman’s development was evident as the Bears dramatically reduced the sacks on Williams, from a league-high 68 in his rookie year down to 24 in 2025. Pro Football Focus (PFF) evaluated Chicago’s offensive line as the NFL’s third-best unit, with Dalman earning Pro Bowl honors for the first time along with top grades as the sixth-best center overall and the seventh-best run blocker at his position.
Consistent Starter with Strong Performance Metrics
Drew Dalman started every regular-season game and both playoff matches for Chicago last year, making his unexpected retirement a significant loss for the Bears. Drafted in the fourth round by the Atlanta Falcons in 2021, Dalman concluded his career with 74 appearances and 57 starts, demonstrating reliability and skill across multiple seasons.
The Bears now face the challenge of restructuring their offensive front to continue their recent success and sustain vital protection schemes for Caleb Williams. This transition will be closely watched as the team moves forward, balancing the need to replace a key player while building on last year’s strong offensive performance.
