Derek Carr, who retired after the 2025 NFL season, may come out of retirement if the right opportunity arises, with the Minnesota Vikings emerging as a prime candidate for his comeback. The Vikings are actively exploring ways to stabilize their quarterback position for the 2026 season after inconsistent performances last year contributed to them missing the playoffs.
The team is evaluating multiple quarterbacks to challenge or replace J.J. McCarthy as the starter, and former Vikings linebacker Ben Leber has expressed confidence that pursuing Carr is a smart move for Minnesota. Leber sees Carr not just as a short-term fix but as a potential multi-year option.
I think it’s a great option, not only just for Year 1, but I think he’s a guy that, if he ends up having a decent year, I could see him signing a two- or three-year deal here with the Vikings,
Leber said during a March 2 appearance on KFAN.
It buys us a little bit more runway. If they feel like they’re really out on J. J. McCarthy, which is unfortunate because you’re not really giving him much of a leash either. But if Derek Carr plays well in Year 1, I don’t see why you just don’t roll it back in Year 2 and then just figure out what to do with J. J. McCarthy and then just stay in the present, I guess.

Current Updates on Carr’s Status and Team Interest
As the offseason advances, Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer has provided insights into the level of interest surrounding Carr and the likelihood of teams aggressively pursuing his return. Breer highlighted that while several teams might quietly consider him, Carr himself will be cautious about committing.
I think the interest in Derek Carr is going to be real, and I think Derek Carr is going to be judicious about this. I think teams are going to be quiet about their interest there,
Breer said on the February 26 edition of The Breer Report.
But he does strike me as somebody where, if you’re looking at him versus Malik Willis, or you’re looking at him versus Kirk Cousins, or you’re looking at him versus Tua [Tagovailoa] or Kyler [Murray], and he’s willing to come to you for a reasonable price, I don’t see why you wouldn’t say the guy could be a pretty good bridge.
Before stepping away from the game, Carr completed 11 NFL seasons primarily with the Las Vegas Raiders and the New Orleans Saints. Over that span, he amassed 41,245 passing yards and 257 touchdowns, securing four Pro Bowl nods, according to StatMuse.
Health Concerns Could Influence Carr’s Potential Return
Breer emphasized that Carr’s physical condition will be a crucial factor in any team’s decision to sign him. Having missed the past season due to a shoulder injury, teams will require medical clarity before making a commitment. Nevertheless, his previous performance level keeps Carr an intriguing option for franchises needing a quarterback.
Now, he hasn’t played in a year,
Breer commented. “You have to see where he is physically. There’s a lot of things that you have to check out there. But he has had his shoulder repaired now and he does have a history of playing at a pretty high level.
So I think he’s a really interesting option for somebody, in a year, again, where you don’t have the depth of quarterbacks at the very top of the draft. And you’re going to have teams that are up there that aren’t going to have an opportunity to draft one because there’s not one worthy of going in that area.
Implications for the Vikings’ Quarterback Future
The Vikings face a critical decision regarding their quarterback roster as they prepare for the 2026 campaign. If Derek Carr chooses to return and proves he can perform at a high level, Minnesota could gain a reliable veteran presence to either start immediately or serve as a bridge while evaluating J.J. McCarthy’s development. This strategy might prevent rushing McCarthy into a starting role before he is ready and provide stability to a position that undermined their playoff hopes last year.
With limited top-tier quarterback prospects expected in the upcoming draft, acquiring a seasoned signal-caller like Carr may be an attractive alternative for multiple teams, not just the Vikings. His possible comeback will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike as franchises seek dependable solutions amid uncertain quarterback markets.
