After the Carolina Panthers struggled defensively in 2024 by allowing the most touchdown passes in the NFL, their defense showed notable improvement in the 2025 season. One of the standout performers was veteran cornerback Mike Jackson, who rose to prominence as a top defensive player by significantly contributing to the team’s reduced touchdown rates and improved pass coverage.
Despite the Panthers’ pass rush generating only 30 sacks in 2025, their secondary limited opponents to 20 touchdown passes, a sharp improvement from the previous year. Jackson played a pivotal role in this turnaround, marking himself as a key player in the team’s defensive resurgence during the season.
Jackson’s Elite Coverage and Ball Skills Garner High Praise
According to Mason Cameron of Pro Football Focus, Jackson’s second year with Carolina saw him deliver a career-best season, earning the second-highest coverage grade among all NFL cornerbacks at 85.8. Cameron highlighted Jackson’s exceptional performance across nearly every coverage metric, ranking him above the 90th percentile among his peers.
“In his second season with the Panthers,”
Cameron explained,
“Jackson produced a career year by generating the second-highest PFF coverage grade (85.8) among cornerbacks and ranking above the 90th percentile in nearly all of PFF’s stable cornerback metrics.”
Jackson’s knack for making impactful plays was evident in his interception and pass disruption numbers. He notched five interceptions, tying him for second-most in the league, and forced 18 incompletions, placing him second among cornerbacks. These accomplishments helped him lead all corners in PFF’s Wins Above Replacement metric with a mark of 0.56.

As a result of his outstanding season, Jackson was ranked as the third-best cornerback by Pro Football Focus for 2025, trailing only Seattle’s Devon Witherspoon and Pittsburgh’s James Pierre—both of whom earned Pro Bowl selections. Remarkably, both Pierre and Jackson were rated higher than nine other corners who participated in the Pro Bowl.
Dynamic Partnership with Jaycee Horn Strengthens Carolina’s Secondary
Jackson and Carolina teammate Jaycee Horn formed a highly effective cornerback duo throughout the 2025 campaign. Jackson’s consistent presence was underscored by starting all 18 games in the Panthers’ season, whereas Pierre, another top cornerback, appeared in only 15 games with six starts.
Jackson’s performance was further validated when he earned a spot on Pro Football Focus’s 2025 All-Pro Team, showcasing his value on a national level. His overall coverage grade of 83.5 notably surpassed Horn’s 57.7, as well as those of several other prominent defensive backs such as Patrick Surtain of the Broncos (73.3), the Eagles’ Quinyon Mitchell (80.3) and Cooper DeJean (78.0), and key players from other franchises including Kamari Lassiter, Derek Stingley Jr., Christian Gonzalez, Keisean Nixon, Nahshon Wright, and Denzel Ward.
Despite these exceptional metrics and his impactful contributions, Jackson did not receive the extent of media recognition that might be expected for a player of his caliber, which leaves open the possibility that wider acclaim could be forthcoming.
Looking Forward: Mike Jackson’s Growing Influence in the NFL
Mike Jackson’s 2025 season revealed him as one of the league’s top cornerbacks, blending reliable coverage with a sharp instinct for game-changing plays. His role in stabilizing Carolina’s secondary signals a positive trajectory both for his career and the Panthers’ defense. As Jackson continues to develop and gain broader recognition, he is poised to remain a key figure in the NFL’s elite cornerback ranks in the seasons ahead.
