Isaac Seumalo’s Free Agency Price Surges After Texans Deal

As the NFL’s new year officially began this Wednesday, speculation is rising that veteran left guard Isaac Seumalo will leave the Pittsburgh Steelers during free agency after three seasons with the team. The 33-year-old, who has faced numerous lingering injuries in recent years, might not be retained by the Steelers.

Houston Texans’ recent contract renewal for guard Ed Ingram now appears to set a new benchmark in the free agency market for players like Seumalo. According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Texans agreed to a three-year, $37.5 million contract with Ingram, averaging $12.5 million per season.

Details of Ed Ingram’s Contract and Performance Impact

Texans reporter Aaron Wilson confirmed that Ingram’s deal includes $23.5 million in guaranteed money, underscoring Houston’s commitment to retaining a key piece of their offensive line ahead of the start of legal tampering.

Ingram’s 2025 season consisted of 929 regular-season snaps, where he earned a 71.5 overall grade from Pro Football Focus (PFF), allowing 24 pressures and four sacks. He maintained solid performance in the postseason, posting a 78.3 overall grade in 143 playoff snaps while giving up six pressures and one sack. His efforts helped the Texans reach the divisional round.

Following Houston’s recent trade of Tytus Howard to the Cleveland Browns, the Texans prioritized securing Ingram, establishing a strong baseline for free-agent guards, including Seumalo.

Isaac Seumalo’s Injury History and On-Field Contribution

Despite facing a pectoral injury throughout last season and a similar issue in 2024, Seumalo appeared in 14 of 17 games and contributed as a steady starter for the Steelers. His 770 snaps last year earned a 74.8 PFF grade. He was responsible for only 15 pressures and three sacks, signaling solid protection overall.

However, Seumalo’s performance declined late in the season. In the Steelers’ final regular-season game, he allowed two pressures and a sack, and in the Wild Card playoff loss versus the Texans, he rated poorly after surrendering five pressures and a sack.

Free Agency Outlook and Pittsburgh’s Potential Plans

Despite these recent struggles, Pro Football Focus ranks Seumalo as the top available guard in free agency. Preceding Ingram’s deal, PFF projected Seumalo’s market value around a one-year, $8 million contract. With the Texans’ new guard deal raising the market ceiling, Seumalo’s free agency price is anticipated to exceed this estimate, likely pricing him out of Pittsburgh’s range.

The Steelers do appear to have an internal option in Spencer Anderson, who has pushed for more playing time at left guard in recent seasons. Pittsburgh General Manager Omar Khan spoke positively about Anderson’s potential at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, possibly signaling a transition to Anderson if Seumalo departs.

Implications of the Texans’ Guard Renewal on the NFL Market

The Texans’ commitment to Ed Ingram not only signals their confidence in his abilities following a strong season but also dramatically elevates the contract expectations for free-agent guards like Isaac Seumalo. For Pittsburgh, this change creates a challenging salary cap decision amid Seumalo’s injury history and late-season dip in form.

As free agency unfolds, Seumalo’s next contract will likely be closely watched as an indicator of guard market rates, while the Steelers’ reliance on internal development with Spencer Anderson could shape their offensive line strategy moving forward.
