Toronto Maple Leafs leader Auston Matthews has been officially named captain of Team USA for the 2026 Winter Olympics. This announcement, made ahead of the global event, confirms Matthews will once again lead the American ice hockey squad on the international stage, building on his prior leadership role and experience.
Matthews initially assumed the captaincy for Team USA during last season’s 4 Nations Face-Off, where the team secured a silver medal after a close final against Canada. His ability to guide the squad through intense competition has earned him this prestigious responsibility once more. Alongside Matthews, Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy and Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk have been named alternate captains, forming a strong leadership trio for the upcoming Games.
General Manager Bill Guerin praised the decision to entrust these key players with leadership duties, emphasizing the diverse strengths each brings to the team. He highlighted their combined effectiveness and enthusiasm as vital assets heading into the Olympics.
“Auston, Charlie and Matthew did a great job in leading our team a year ago at the 4 Nations Face-Off and it’s great to have them back in those roles for the Olympics. They all bring different leadership traits to the table and I know all three are excited, as is our whole team, about representing our country as part of Team USA.” – Bill Guerin, Team USA GM
Matthews joins a leadership core that features Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin and New York Rangers captain J.T. Miller, ensuring a deep pool of experience and guidance. Both Larkin and Miller are expected to provide strong support to Matthews both on and off the ice during critical moments.

Auston Matthews Embraces the Honor of Leading Team USA
Wearing the captain’s “C” for Team USA is a distinguished honor that Auston Matthews holds in high regard. Representing his country at the Olympic Games carries significant emotional weight and pride for him as an athlete and leader.
“It is crazy to think now we are here, and we get this opportunity, and it is very special. Extremely honored to represent (my) country and wear the Team USA jersey. It means that much more doing it somewhere like the Olympics.” – Auston Matthews, Team USA Captain
The legacy of donning the stars and stripes is one Matthews respectfully acknowledges, with the goal of leading the United States to its first Olympic hockey gold since the iconic “Miracle on Ice” victory at Lake Placid in 1980. Previous U.S. teams came close but fell short of the top medal in 2002 and 2010, making this a particularly meaningful challenge for Matthews and his teammates.
Building a United Team for Olympic Success
Matthews envisions his leadership not as a solitary role but as one rooted in fostering unity and shared commitment among all members of Team USA. He stresses that Olympic success depends on teamwork, where every player contributes selflessly to fulfill whatever role is necessary.
“I envision our team as a team. The camaraderie we have in the room and the selflessness of each guy to step in and fill a role that needs to be had and do whatever it takes and whatever is necessary to help the team. That was really evident at 4 Nations and the team at the Olympics will try to carry that on.” – Auston Matthews, Team USA Captain
That strong sense of camaraderie brought the U.S. squad close to victory in the 4 Nations Face-Off and is expected to be a cornerstone of their approach at the Olympics. With Matthews leading a talented leadership group, Team USA aims to turn this cohesion into a winning formula on the world stage.
