Edmonton Oilers Bring Back Paul Coffey to Boost Defense

The Edmonton Oilers have announced the return of Hall of Fame defenseman Paul Coffey to their coaching staff as they seek to improve their defensive performance this season. Coffey, who played a pivotal role in the Oilers’ late 1980s dynasty, initially served behind the bench from December 2023 through the end of last season. After a brief period as Special Advisor to Ownership and Hockey Operations, he is now rejoining the team’s coaching group to help address ongoing defensive challenges.

Edmonton has faced difficulties defensively this season, ranking 25th in the league with a goals-against average of 3.29, a significant decline from fifth place last year when Coffey was on staff and the Oilers allowed 2.78 goals per game. Head coach Kris Knoblauch confirmed that assistant coach Mark Stuart will continue managing the penalty kill, maintaining some consistency amid the changes.

Knoblauch Welcomes Coffey’s Return and Ongoing Collaboration

Kris Knoblauch noted that his communication with Coffey has remained steady even after Coffey’s shift from the bench to a special advisory role. He believes Coffey’s return will have a positive impact on both the players and the coaching team.

I have been in regular contact with Paul since last summer and I believe we will benefit both as a team and as a staff from his return at this time,

Knoblauch said about Coffey rejoining the bench.

For his part, Coffey expressed enthusiasm about reuniting with the Oilers and contributing to the remainder of the season.

I’m excited to return and work alongside Kris and the entire staff,

Coffey remarked.

With 24 games left in the season, there is ample time to build on the many positives and build momentum for another long playoff run.

Coffey is slated to rejoin the Oilers by the end of the current week, just in time for the NHL schedule to resume next week.

The Search for a Defensive Spark: Why Coffey’s Return Matters

Knoblauch indicated that the Oilers need a fresh spark to help shift the team’s downward trajectory in defense. He believes Coffey’s experience and perspective could provide the necessary catalyst.

I think he can offer a lot to our group. Right now, I think we need a little jolt, a little something, to change the direction of where our team has been going,

Knoblauch said.

I’ve got a lot of respect for Paul in my time working with him,

he continued.

I didn’t know him before, but obviously I liked working with him, and thought between the two of us and those coaching staffs that we’ve had in the past, that we’ve got the most out of the guys. With him coming back, I think he’ll give us that jolt, and I think he’ll add some new perspectives.

Like I said before, where our team is at right now, we’re just okay, and we feel that we need a little something to just push us over, give us a little something.

Coffey’s legacy as one of the NHL’s premier defensemen includes multiple Stanley Cup victories, including with the Oilers and the Pittsburgh Penguins, before retiring in 2001. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004, recognizing his outstanding career achievements.
