Jordan Harris Launches Youth Hockey Mentorship Program “Harris’ Huskies”

Boston Bruins defenseman Jordan Harris has introduced “Harris’ Huskies,” a mentorship program designed to connect young hockey players with role models from the Northeastern University Hockey Team. Launched in Boston, the initiative aims to foster growth in the sport by engaging children affiliated with SCORE Boston, a longtime community partner of the Bruins, supported by a grant from the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition.

Program Offers Equipment, Clinics, and Campus Experiences to Youth

Harris’ Huskies will provide a variety of experiences including equipment donations for new players, visits to Northeastern University hockey games, tours of the university campus, and hockey clinics led by Harris and his fiancée throughout the season. The program focuses on supporting children who might not otherwise have access to hockey, working through SCORE Boston, a nonprofit organization dedicated to opening doors for underserved youth in the sport. SCORE Boston is also connected to the NHL’s “Hockey is For Everyone” initiative, making this partnership deeply rooted in inclusivity.

Harris’ Background and Connection to Northeastern Hockey

A Haverhill, Massachusetts native, Harris graduated from Northeastern in 2022, where he captained the Huskies in his senior year. Notably, Harris scored the game-winning goal in double overtime of the 2020 Beanpot tournament, securing Northeastern’s third consecutive title. His fiancée, Codie Cross, also has strong ties to the university as a former player on the women’s hockey team from 2016 to 2020, further strengthening the couple’s connection to the Northeastern hockey community.

Leadership and Support from University and Team Officials

Harris spoke about the importance of expanding access to hockey:

“When we open pathways for kids to play hockey, we can use the game as a platform to inspire the next generation,”

he said.

“I’m honored to have fellow Northeastern players join me in activations that help more kids find their place in this sport.”

Jerry Keefe, Northeastern’s Head Men’s Hockey Coach, praised Harris’s leadership, stating,

“From the moment Jordan entered our locker room, he embodied the type of leadership traits that made everyone around him better, including me as a coach. Our players look forward to working with him on an initiative that blends on-ice skill development with life lessons that resonate beyond the game.”

Boston Bruins and SCORE Boston Collaborate to Enrich Youth Engagement

The Boston Bruins are enhancing the program by offering unique experiences for SCORE Boston participants, including attending Bruins’ games, such as the upcoming match against the Columbus Blue Jackets on February 26. Bob Sweeney, President of the Boston Bruins Foundation, emphasized the importance of partnerships like this one:

“The Bruins have a long and proud legacy of giving back, with a strong belief in collaborations that lead to the betterment of our community. Jordan’s efforts add a meaningful element to our ongoing relationship with SCORE Boston.”

Wendell Taylor, president of SCORE Boston, remarked on the impact, saying,

“Many of the children in our program will be able to see themselves in Jordan – a local kid who achieved his dreams in hockey, and an example of diverse representation in the sport. This is a game-changing partnership for the youth we serve, and we are profoundly grateful to Jordan, Northeastern, and the Bruins.”

Linking Inclusion and Growth Through NHL Player Inclusion Coalition Support

Harris also contributes as a member of the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition (NHL PIC), which seeks to enhance diversity and inclusion both on and off the ice. The NHL PIC supports efforts like Harris’ Huskies through community events, education, and investment in grassroots hockey programs. Funding for Harris’ Huskies comes from the NHL PIC Action Fund, established in 2023 with financial backing from the NHL/NHLPA Industry Growth Fund to nurture hockey’s expansion into new communities.

Endorsements Highlight NHL’s Commitment to Growing Hockey

Rob Knesaurek, NHL Senior Vice President of Youth Development and Industry Growth, commented,

“The NHL/NHLPA Industry Growth Fund is always pursuing innovative ways to strengthen the future of hockey. Members of the NHL PIC have been at the forefront of developing new ideas, and we are proud to provide support for Jordan’s community efforts.”

NHLPA Divisional Player Representative Chris Campoli added,

“Through this program, Jordan is representing the tradition of NHL players using their platforms to grow the game and support the next generation. We are excited to see the positive impact that will come from his involvement.”

Building a Foundation for Lasting Impact in Youth Hockey

By connecting young players with role models and providing resources like equipment and training, Harris’ Huskies is poised to create meaningful opportunities within the hockey community. With the backing of Northeastern University, the Boston Bruins, SCORE Boston, and the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition, this program could inspire countless youth to pursue their passion for hockey. The initiative exemplifies how sport can serve as a platform for mentorship, inclusion, and personal growth, shaping the future of the game in Boston and beyond.
