In a tense Olympic gold medal hockey final, Connor McDavid came extremely close to shifting the momentum for Canada, only to be denied by a crucial save from U.S. goalie Connor Hellebuyck. The pivotal moment occurred during Team USA’s 2-1 overtime victory over Canada, highlighting the intense competition and razor-thin margins in the final match.
American forward Matthew Tkachuk later discussed this turning point on the Wingmen podcast, emphasizing how McDavid’s breakaway in the second period almost rewrote the game’s outcome.
Tkachuk Reflects on the Defining Breakaway Sequence
The critical moment unfolded early in the second period with the score tied at 1-1. Following Sidney Crosby’s injury earlier in the tournament, McDavid had taken over as Canada’s captain and found himself alone on a breakaway, a situation where he has often excelled throughout his career.
The best player in the world is Connor McDavid. Top to bottom, there’s nobody like him. There’s probably never been anybody like him in history,
Tkachuk said.
It was kind of like it could’ve been a changing of the guard in Canada, with Crosby being out and him coming down on the breakaway. If he scores that goal, he’s the Canadian hero who gets them back in it, and they ultimately have a good chance at that point.

McDavid’s attempt was met by Hellebuyck’s composed and confident goaltending. Tkachuk described the save as a moment of mental strength for Team USA, underscoring its importance in the high-stakes game.
He comes down, and Helly just outwaits him, confident, calm, just chill in the crease, and makes an incredible breakaway save that gave us so much mental momentum,
Tkachuk added.
The best player in the world is coming down on a breakaway, and he just shuts the door on him.
McDavid’s Record-Setting Olympic Performance
Despite the loss, McDavid’s performance throughout the tournament was historic. He amassed 13 points in six games, breaking the previous Olympic record of 11 points held by Finland‘s Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu from 2006. McDavid was honored as both the tournament MVP and Best Forward.
However, McDavid was unable to score in the final, repeatedly stymied by Hellebuyck, who made 41 saves and earned the title of goalkeeper of the tournament.
I thought we played well, I thought we did enough to win,
McDavid acknowledged after the match.
Their goalie made some big saves, I thought we also missed some chances. Obviously disappointing, there’s no way around it, there’s way to sugar coat it. It sucks.
Canada dominated in shots on goal with 42 compared to the USA’s 28 and generated several quality scoring chances. Yet, Hellebuyck’s steadfast goaltending, which included spectacular saves on Devon Toews and Macklin Celebrini, was a deciding factor.
Tkachuk’s remarks highlight how close Canada came to seizing the momentum that McDavid’s breakaway could have ignited.
Oh my gosh, they will be talking about this performance for generations,
Tkachuk commented on Hellebuyck’s effort.
McDavid Faces Another Close Loss in a Major Final
The defeat marked another painful near-miss for McDavid, following back-to-back Stanley Cup Final losses with the Edmonton Oilers in 2024 and 2025. At 29, he remains without an Olympic gold medal or Stanley Cup championship despite his personal success and leadership roles.
Overall the experience was good, McDavid reflected, adding,
It was a special group to be a part of, we’ll have those memories for a lifetime.
The gold medal outcome was finally decided in overtime when Jack Hughes scored the winning goal for Team USA, capping a dramatic tournament where McDavid’s record-setting effort fell just short of ultimate victory.
