Crystal Dunn Retires: NWSL Stars Praise Her Lasting Legacy

Crystal Dunn announced her retirement from professional soccer last week, ending a remarkable 12-year international career that left a profound mark on the sport. Known for her achievements as a World Cup champion, Olympic gold medalist, and former NWSL MVP, Dunn’s influence extends far beyond her individual accolades, inspiring countless teammates and young players across the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

The news of Dunn’s departure spread quickly at the NWSL Media Day in Los Angeles, where players found it difficult to articulate the significance of her career. With 160 caps for the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) and stints at clubs including Chelsea, Washington Spirit, Gotham FC, and Paris Saint-Germain, Dunn’s impact is part of the fabric of women’s soccer today. Her career consistently demonstrated leadership, resilience, and an infectious energy that elevated everyone around her.

Reflecting on Crystal Dunn’s Career and Legacy

Dunn captured the hearts of fans and teammates alike, not only through her skill but also by the way she carried herself both on and off the pitch. In a statement shared by U.S. Soccer, Dunn expressed her sentiments about retiring:

I leave the game with a sense of peace and deep fulfillment for all that I’ve accomplished,

Dunn said.

I’m grateful for the incredible people I’ve had the privilege to work with, from teammates and coaches to family and friends, and all the amazing moments we’ve shared. I’m very much looking forward to my next chapter ahead.

Her presence as a senior international player was especially felt by the new generation of athletes she mentored. Mallory Swanson, a fellow USWNT standout, recalled the joy Dunn brought to every match and practice session.

I think off the field, [I’m] just gonna miss her dancing in the locker room, her DJ vibes, all the impact that she’s had,

Swanson said during Media Day. Emphasizing Dunn’s unique ability to energize the team, Swanson highlighted how Dunn could even encourage the most reserved individuals, including USWNT manager Emma Hayes, to let loose and enjoy the moment.

The relationship between Dunn and Trinity Rodman also exemplified the role model Dunn represented. Rodman, who won Olympic gold alongside Dunn at Paris 2024, called her a true legend.

Crystal’s amazing, she’s one of the G-O-A-T-S of soccer,

Rodman said at the event, underscoring Dunn’s elite status in the sport.

Setting a Standard With Her Unique Personality

Despite their ten-year age gap, Dunn and Rodman shared a strong bond, particularly in how they energized their teammates before games. Rodman described their rapport at Media Day:

Crystal and I get along really well and vibe off of each other because our personalities are both very loud,

Rodman explained.

She was really good at connecting with younger players, but also having that relationship with older players, so setting the standard while also empathizing with the newer players. The Olympics were so much fun with her. And yeah, she’s like, just like the cool aunt.

Dunn’s role as a three-time Olympian with 16 Summer Games appearances culminated in leading the USWNT to its first Olympic gold medal in 12 years at Paris 2024. Her presence spanned generational lines, encouraging younger players while maintaining strong bonds with veterans, which is part of what made her leadership so invaluable.

Inspiring Motherhood and Career Resilience

Beyond her athletic successes, Dunn has been a trailblazer in balancing motherhood and professional soccer. Mallory Swanson, who recently became a mother, drew inspiration from Dunn’s example after she welcomed her son Marcel in 2021.

Sophia Wilson also reflected on the encouragement Dunn’s journey has provided her on the path of motherhood and sport.

I could have a baby and come back and play because I saw Crystal do it and she’s just such an inspiration,

Wilson remarked at Media Day.

I mean, I can’t say enough things about what she’s done for the game.

Dunn began her professional career as the first overall pick by the Washington Spirit in the 2014 NWSL College Draft, following a standout collegiate career at the University of North Carolina, where she earned four-time All-American honors. Her college achievements included becoming the first player since Mia Hamm in 1993 to win ACC Player of the Year three times. Throughout her career, whether as the “cool aunt,” a big sister figure, or simply a supportive teammate, Dunn’s influence extended far beyond her role on the field.

Serving as a Role Model for Rising Talent

2024’s NWSL Rookie of the Year and Midfielder of the Year, Croix Bethune, struggled to find words to describe Dunn’s influence on her own career. Bethune, who also earned a spot on the 2024 Olympic team, revealed how much Dunn represented success and possibility to her growing up.

I was shocked to hear the news like – okay – you’re an OG, but like, girl, you still got it!

Bethune told GOAL exclusively.

I mean, for me, seeing a person of color on the national team thriving and being successful, that really stood out to me. And I feel a lot like other girls look up to her in that sense.

She added,

Going to the Olympics and seeing Crystal as a person that made me love her even more, because she’s so much fun, she’s goofy, she’s intelligent, she’s a mom, so like, I can relate to her in different aspects,

before concluding,

Her retiring, I just feel like, isn’t right.

Current USWNT midfielder Olivia Moultrie reflected on what makes an exceptional teammate and cited Dunn as a prime example of a competitor with a joyful off-field presence.

She’s not with us anymore, but I think Sam Coffey was a really good example of this and just a fun teammate to be around. And also with this being relevant right now, I feel like Crystal Dunn is a good version of this – Just like an ultimate competitor, but just super fun vibes off the field,

Moultrie shared with GOAL.

I was shocked, but, yeah, really cool for me that I got to share the field with her a little bit and just experience being her teammate. But, just like a huge congrats to her – she’s done everything basically. So it’s just super cool that she gets to move on to the next phase of her life with her family,

she added.

Closing a Memorable Chapter with Gratitude and Hope

As Dunn steps away from professional play, her energy, leadership, and trademark locker room dancing will surely remain a lasting influence. She shared heartfelt reflections on her career in a retirement post:

I look forward to spending more time with my family and being a more present mom. This was not a decision made lightly, but was one made with immense gratitude for everything I’ve experienced as a professional soccer player. I’ve grown through challenges, celebrated incredible triumphs, and cherished every part of the journey. I first kicked a soccer ball at the age of four, never knowing it would change my life and bring me so many moments beyond my imagination. Every stage of my career taught me the importance of humility, resilience, and gratitude. My journey wasn’t perfect, but it was beautiful — filled with trophies, medals, lessons, and the indescribable joy of welcoming a baby along the way.

More than a decorated athlete, Crystal Dunn has paved a unique path for future generations. Her dominance as an outside back, combined with her relatable and loving nature as a mother, teammate, and mentor, has inspired many young players who see themselves in her. Dunn’s legacy in the NWSL and beyond is a powerful example of dreaming big and achieving with heart.
