Steven Gonzalez, former offensive lineman for the St. Louis Battlehawks, revealed his retirement on his X account on Thursday, bringing an end to a football career spanning over two decades. The announcement marks the conclusion of a journey fueled by passion, resilience, and dedication to the sport.
A Journey Through Professional Ranks and Achievements
Standing 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 341 pounds, the 28-year-old native of Union City, New Jersey, was drafted by the Birmingham Stallions in the 2026 UFL Draft but was released by the team on February 4, 2026. Earlier in his career, Gonzalez signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent on April 30, 2020, but was waived by the Cardinals before the 2020 season began. He later joined the Buffalo Bills in May 2021, only to be released in August that same year.
Gonzalez’s most significant professional impact came in the XFL, where the St. Louis Battlehawks selected him in the third round, 23rd overall, during Phase 4 of the 2023 draft. He started ten games in his first season and earned a spot on the All-XFL Team, reflecting his solid performance on the field.
Consistent Contributor to St. Louis Battlehawks’ Offensive Success
Throughout the 2024 season, Gonzalez started ten games as the Battlehawks’ offense excelled, ranking sixth in total offense yards with 2,721 yards and third in rushing with 977 yards. The team also achieved top-ten rankings in passing yards, yards per game, and touchdowns, underscoring Gonzalez’s role in their offensive strength.

In August 2024, the Battlehawks re-signed Gonzalez, and during the 2025 season, he appeared in nine starts. St. Louis posted an impressive 8-2 record, averaging 23.1 points and nearly 290 yards per game. Their balanced attack included strong passing and rushing statistics and a defensive effort that allowed just 22 sacks. Gonzalez’s efforts were recognized with selection to the All-UFL Team.
Collegiate Career and Early Highlights
Before turning professional, Gonzalez was a key player at Penn State from 2016 to 2019. Over those four seasons, he started 42 games at left guard out of 50 appearances and earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors in 2019. That year, he helped Penn State achieve remarkable success in the Cotton Bowl, tying a record with five rushing touchdowns and setting a new program mark with 396 rushing yards. The team also set a Cotton Bowl record for points scored in the first half.
Reflecting on a Career Fueled by Faith and Determination
In his retirement message, Gonzalez expressed gratitude for his physical abilities and the opportunities football has provided over more than 20 years, acknowledging the role of faith throughout his career.
“Well, I never would have thought the time would come where I officially announce my retirement from the game I love so much.
