Dave Portnoy Slams Reggie Miller’s Caitlin Clark Comparison

Caitlin Clark drew widespread attention on Sunday after her reaction to a comparison by Indiana Pacers legend Reggie Miller, who likened her playing style to that of Payton Pritchard during national television coverage. Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, a vocal supporter of Clark, challenged Miller’s assessment and shared his own perspective on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Portnoy Challenges Miller’s Comparison and Offers Alternatives

On social media, Portnoy posted the clip of Miller’s comparison, highlighting Clark’s initial puzzled look before realizing she was live on NBC, which quickly went viral. Known for his allegiance to the Boston Celtics, Portnoy rejected the idea that Clark resembles Payton Pritchard and suggested two NBA greats as better parallels, also referencing the current NBA MVP.

“I love Payton, but this may be worst comp ever. It’s Magic or Steph. Maybe at worst, SGA,” Portnoy tweeted.

Clark is often compared to Steph Curry because of her deep-range shooting prowess. She routinely attempts three-pointers from near halfcourt, echoing Curry’s bold shooting style during her time at Iowa. However, Clark is far more than a shooter; she is an exceptional playmaker as well.

As a rookie, Clark led the WNBA in assists, making the Magic Johnson comparison relevant given Magic’s legendary vision and court awareness, though the Lakers icon was physically more imposing. Clark’s ability to read the game and distribute the ball ranks her among the WNBA’s most skilled facilitators.

Portnoy’s inclusion of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as a possible comparison is less obvious since the Oklahoma City Thunder star is more noted for his midrange shooting. Nonetheless, Clark is likely to prefer these comparisons over Miller’s original choice.

During the same panel discussion where Miller made the initial comparison, Carmelo Anthony offered a different viewpoint, identifying Luka Doncic as Clark’s closest NBA equivalent.

Caitlin Clark Admiring Luka Doncic’s Style and Approach

On NBC’s Sunday Night Basketball, Clark expressed admiration for Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic, specifically praising his ability to control games effectively. She shared with the NBA on NBC team that she aims to model her own game after Doncic’s when she returns for her third WNBA season.

“I think the way he cannot only score the ball, but also the way he passes,” Clark said, according to FanSided. “I think the thing about him is he’s not the fastest or the most athletic, but he can get the defender to move where he wants him to go.”

Clark’s remarks emphasize her focus on not only scoring but also manipulating defenders and creating opportunities, reflecting her evolving skills as a comprehensive guard.

As conversations about a potential WNBA lockout continue, uncertainty remains around whether Clark will have the chance to showcase these developments on the court in the near future.
