Fever’s Top Priority: Keeping Kelsey Mitchell Over Clark?

The Indiana Fever’s backcourt leadership features both emerging star Caitlin Clark and veteran guard Kelsey Mitchell, with the latter instrumental in guiding the team to playoffs despite significant injuries this past season. Mitchell recently spoke on Between the Lines with Lisa Leslie, sharing insights about the organization’s support and her perspective on her continued importance to the Fever.

Throughout a challenging and injury-filled 2025 season, Mitchell carried a heavy load for Indiana, leading them to upset the No. 3 seed Atlanta Dream in the first playoff round. The Fever then pushed the powerhouse Las Vegas Aces to a decisive Game 5 before falling short. In the wake of this run, Fever general manager Amber Cox made it clear that retaining Mitchell remains the franchise’s highest priority.

“I’m going to sound like a broken record from last year. The priority will be Kelsey Mitchell and making sure she remains in a Fever jersey. Wow, what a season for her. She laid it all out on the line,” Cox said. “(Mitchell) will continue to be a focal point as we enter free agency.”

This declaration reflects how central Mitchell is to the Fever’s plans amid the evolving team dynamics in free agency.

Mitchell’s Confidence Boosted by Fever Leadership

During her interview, Mitchell conveyed how the confidence shown by Fever head coach Stephanie White has been transformative for her career. She highlighted that White’s belief in her abilities was unlike anything she had experienced before, helping her elevate her game during critical moments.

“It was the first time in my eight years — and it’s no disrespect to any coach, GM I had — Steph (Fever coach Stephanie White) was the first coach that I had in my eight years that, like, when she looked at me … I’m like, damn, she really believes in me,” Mitchell said. “And I felt it. Like I could sense it. … She believed in my abilities and made me feel, like, I kind of had, like, superpowers because that’s all you really need.”

Mitchell’s 2025 season statistics reflect that elevated performance. She averaged a career-best 20.2 points per game with a 39.4% success rate from beyond the arc and raised her scoring to 22.3 points per game in the playoffs while shooting 42.9% from three-point range.

“When you got a coach that believes in you, it’s an unmatched feeling because it makes you feel like I could do anything. And when it was bad, she criticized me in a way that helped me still be good. … It felt like she cared, and that’s hard to find in a pro career. And I think people don’t know what that’s like when you find people that really believe in you and care about how you are. And I’m like, damn. And so me and Steph have had a bond ever since.”

Implications for the Fever’s Offseason and Future Strategy

The Fever’s run to the brink of the WNBA Finals in 2025, despite injuries sidelining crucial players, leaves the franchise at a critical crossroads during the current offseason. The team faces important personnel decisions with several key players entering unrestricted and restricted free agency. Natasha Howard, Sophie Cunningham, Damiris Dantas, Sydney Colson, Brianna Turner, Odyssey Sims, and Aari McDonald are unrestricted free agents, while Lexie Hull and Kristy Wallace hold restricted free agent status.

Coupled with questions about the 2026 WNBA season amid unresolved collective bargaining discussions, the Fever’s management must carefully balance retaining their core contributors, like Mitchell, while integrating emerging talents such as Caitlin Clark. The organization’s commitment to Mitchell signals a focus on leadership continuity and maximizing proven production.

As the Fever navigate these challenges, the dynamic between Mitchell’s veteran presence and Clark’s rising stardom will likely shape the team’s identity. Maintaining that balance is essential as they prepare for the uncertain upcoming season and aim to build upon their recent playoff successes.
