In Orinda, California, Miramonte High School is paying tribute to one of its most distinguished graduates by renaming its gymnasium after Sabrina Ionescu, a celebrated WNBA player and Olympian. The decision was approved by the Acalanes Union High School District to officially designate the space as the Sabrina Ionescu Gymnasium.
From Local Athlete to Professional and Olympic Success
Sabrina Ionescu, who finished her high school education at Miramonte in 2016, has had a remarkable sports career beginning with extensive success at the school’s basketball program. She further honed her skills competing at the NCAA level with the University of Oregon. In 2020, she was the first overall pick in the WNBA draft and now plays guard for the New York Liberty.
Her achievements include becoming a WNBA All-Star and representing the United States as an Olympian. Ionescu has also gained wider recognition as the cover athlete for the WNBA Edition of NBA 2K24, highlighting her impact in professional basketball.
Enduring Influence Recognized by School Leadership
Ben Campopiano, principal of Miramonte High School, emphasized Ionescu’s lasting connection to the campus, saying,
“She has a lasting legacy… obviously here at Miramonte.”
The community continues to feel her influence nearly a decade after her graduation.
While the renaming has been confirmed, the date for the official ceremony to unveil the Sabrina Ionescu Gymnasium has not yet been determined.
Significance of the Honor
This tribute not only marks a milestone for Miramonte High School but also highlights the rising prominence of women’s basketball through Ionescu’s accomplishments. The gymnasium naming is poised to inspire current and future students, celebrating a local athlete who reached elite levels nationally and internationally in her sport.
