Miramonte High School in Orinda has officially renamed its gymnasium in honor of Sabrina Ionescu, a distinguished alumna and WNBA star. The change was approved on Tuesday as part of a tribute to Ionescu, who grew up in nearby Walnut Creek and remains a celebrated figure in the East Bay community.
Sabrina Ionescu’s Journey from High School to Professional Success
Ionescu graduated from Miramonte High a decade ago before attending the University of Oregon, where she played college basketball for the Ducks. She has since risen to prominence in the WNBA, helping lead the New York Liberty to their inaugural championship two years ago. Her achievements have made her a role model for young athletes throughout the Bay Area.
School Leaders Plan a Special Celebration for Ionescu’s Return
The school’s principal and leaders describe Ionescu as an inspiration and an embodiment of perseverance and skill. They are preparing a ceremony to honor her legacy and formally welcome her back to her alma mater when she visits the Bay Area. This tribute reflects the community’s pride and the impact of her accomplishments beyond basketball.
