Early Life and Background

Andrew Van Ginkel was born on July 1, 1995, in Rock Valley, Iowa. He attended Rock Valley Community High School, where he played football for the Nighthawks, a team that was consolidated with Boyden–Hull High School. During his high school career, he played as both a quarterback and defensive back. Despite his talent, he did not participate in recruiting camps after his senior year, which limited his exposure to larger college programs.
After high school, Van Ginkel began his college career at the University of South Dakota, where he played defensive end. He redshirted his first year and then played one season, earning first-team all Missouri Valley Football Conference honors as a freshman.
