Anfernee Jennings was born on May 1, 1997, in Dadeville, Alabama. He attended Dadeville High School, where he excelled in football, playing both defensive end and tight end for the Tigers. During his junior season, Jennings made 171 tackles and recorded seven sacks, earning honorable mention Super All-State recognition. As a senior, he was named first-team 4A All-State and the 4A Lineman of the Year, finishing the season with 170 tackles, 14 sacks, and nine pass breakups. Rated as a four-star recruit, Jennings chose to play college football at the University of Alabama, turning down offers from several other prominent programs.

Jennings redshirted his true freshman season at Alabama as he transitioned from defensive end to outside linebacker. He made his mark as a key reserve during his redshirt freshman year, finishing with 19 tackles and three quarterback hurries. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious injury during the 2018 Sugar Bowl against Clemson, which sidelined him for the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship Game. After recovering from a PCL injury and a blood clot in his leg, Jennings returned for his redshirt junior season, where he recorded 51 tackles, 6.5 sacks, and an interception, along with a team-high 11 passes defended. He concluded his collegiate career with impressive statistics, totaling 194 tackles, 15.5 sacks, and 20 passes defended over 54 games.
