Jared Dane McCain (born February 20, 2004) is an American professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association (NBA). A consensus five-star recruit in the 2023 class, he played college basketball for the Duke Blue Devils before being selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as the 16th overall pick in the first round of the 2024 NBA draft. McCain currently plays for the Oklahoma City Thunder, wearing jersey number 3 as a shooting guard.
Early Life and Background
Jared Dane McCain was born on February 20, 2004, in Sacramento, California. He grew up in a supportive athletic household alongside his older brother, Jayce, who also pursued basketball at the collegiate level. McCain is of mixed racial heritage. His mother, Jina, is an American of White and Filipino descent, and his father, Lance, is African American.
McCain attended Centennial High School in Corona, California, where he developed into one of the top prospects in the country. He graduated in 2023 after a standout prep career that included two straight California Gatorade Player of the Year honors. During his high school years, he also appeared in three seasons of the YouTube docuseries Believe, directed and filmed by Nick Ramos, which helped introduce him to a wider audience.
Path to Basketball
As a junior at Centennial, McCain averaged 16.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game and was named the 2021–22 Gatorade California Boys Basketball Player of the Year. In his senior year, he raised those numbers to 17.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game, repeating as California Mr. Basketball and earning a selection to the 2023 McDonald’s All-American Boys Game.
McCain was a consensus five-star recruit and one of the top-ranked players in the 2023 class. He verbally committed to Duke on March 18, 2022, and signed his national letter of intent on November 9 of that year, choosing the Blue Devils over offers from Gonzaga, Houston, Kansas, and Louisville. Early Career (2023–2024)
McCain made his college debut on November 6, 2023, scoring eight points in 15 minutes during a 92–54 win over Dartmouth. He quickly established himself as a reliable scorer, posting 21 points and five rebounds in a 72–71 victory against Clemson on January 27, 2024, and earning ACC Rookie of the Week honors on January 29.
On February 17, 2024, McCain tied the Duke freshman record with 35 points in a 76–67 win over Florida State, a mark previously held by Zion Williamson. He added 30 points and five rebounds in a 93–55 victory over James Madison in the NCAA tournament and finished his freshman season averaging 14.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. McCain’s lone season at Duke ended with selection to the ACC All-Rookie team. McCain was selected 16th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2024 NBA draft and signed a four-year contract on July 4, 2024. On November 13, he recorded a career-high 34 points and 10 assists in a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers and was later named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for October and November, becoming the first 76ers player to earn the honor since Ben Simmons in March 2018.
His rookie season was cut short on December 14, 2024, when the team announced he had suffered a meniscus tear in his left knee, and on January 10, 2025, it was reported he would miss the remainder of the year. On October 1, 2025, the 76ers announced that McCain had undergone surgery to repair a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of his right thumb, sidelining him for at least one month. On February 4, 2026, McCain was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for a 2026 first-round pick and three second-round picks. On May 22, 2026, he posted a playoff career-high 24 points in a 123–108 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals.

McCain represented the United States at the 2022 FIBA U18 Americas Championship in Tijuana, Mexico, helping the team go 6–0 and capture gold while averaging 11.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. 2025 Season Performance
