Jared Dane McCain was born on February 20, 2004, in Sacramento, California. He grew up in a supportive athletic household alongside his older brother, Jayce, who also pursued basketball at the collegiate level. McCain is of mixed racial heritage. His mother, Jina, is an American of White and Filipino descent, and his father, Lance, is African American.

McCain attended Centennial High School in Corona, California, where he developed into one of the top prospects in the country. He graduated in 2023 after a standout prep career that included two straight California Gatorade Player of the Year honors. Early Career (2023–2024)

McCain made his college debut on November 6, 2023, scoring eight points in 15 minutes during a 92–54 win over Dartmouth. He quickly established himself as a reliable scorer, posting 21 points and five rebounds in a 72–71 victory against Clemson on January 27, 2024, and earning ACC Rookie of the Week honors on January 29.

On February 17, 2024, McCain tied the Duke freshman record with 35 points in a 76–67 win over Florida State, a mark previously held by Zion Williamson. He added 30 points and five rebounds in a 93–55 victory over James Madison in the NCAA tournament and finished his freshman season averaging 14.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
