Morey Defends Jared McCain Trade, Confident in Sixers’ East Run

The NBA trade deadline saw several significant moves across Eastern Conference contenders aiming to strengthen their rosters for a championship push. High-profile transactions included James Harden‘s trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Nikola Vučević joining the Boston Celtics. The Detroit Pistons added Kevin Huerter and Dario Šarić, while the New York Knicks acquired Jose Alvarado, all seeking to enhance their playoff prospects.

Despite these roster changes, the sixth-seeded Philadelphia 76ers chose a different path. Expectations were raised after star center Joel Embiid indicated hopes the front office would avoid limiting spending to reduce luxury tax payments and instead focus on adding impactful players. Contrary to those hopes, the Sixers refrained from acquiring new players, opting instead to trade guard Jared McCain and veteran Eric Gordon for draft picks, a move widely seen as aimed at staying below the luxury tax threshold for the fourth year in a row.

Morey’s Perspective on the Eastern Conference Landscape

Philadelphia’s president of basketball operations, Daryl Morey, remained composed and confident regarding the team’s chances in the East despite other teams’ deadline maneuvers. Addressing critics and fans on Friday, Morey stated,

“We like our chances in the East,”

adding,

“We feel like we’re in the mix with the top teams there. Obviously, we’ve got to prove that on the court. But, just reiterating, we were looking to add, and we didn’t add. But we still believe in this team. … Folks have speculated on the improvements of our East competitors. I don’t see it, personally. I think all the teams made moves at the deadline, but there weren’t any needle-movers, in my opinion.”

When reminded that Harden’s trade to Cleveland is often described as a blockbuster, Morey cautiously avoided discussing individual teams but maintained,

“I’m just saying, I mean, objectively, teams in the East, the array is similar. Like, if you were to look at teams’ chances before and after — that’s my opinion. I think people can have differences of opinion.”

Trade Strategy Focused on Long-Term Flexibility

Morey acknowledged the disappointment among fans who perceive the Sixers’ consistent avoidance of the luxury tax as indicating a preference to save money over aggressively pursuing a title, particularly as Embiid’s prime years narrow. Morey clarified their position, saying,

“I’d say we were trying to add to the team and we didn’t find a deal that made sense that we thought could move the needle on our ability to win this year,”

emphasizing that collective bargaining agreement pressures influenced decisions across the league.

The trade involving Eric Gordon, sent to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for a 2032 second-round pick swap, was designed to create sufficient room to convert Dominick Barlow’s two-way contract to a standard NBA deal. According to Spotrac, the Sixers now sit $1.7 million below the luxury tax line, with approximately $3.9 million in cap space under the first apron, a threshold limiting financial flexibility further, which factored into roster adjustments.

However, Morey stated,

“But that wasn’t the primary reason for the Jared deal. We see Jared as somebody that’s more likely to help a team in the future.”

Details and Rationale of the Jared McCain Trade

On Wednesday, the Sixers traded Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder, acquiring a 2026 first-round pick from the Houston Rockets and three second-round picks, including the most favorable 2027 second-round selection among the Thunder, Rockets, Indiana Pacers, and Miami Heat, as well as 2028 second-rounders originally belonging to the Milwaukee Bucks and Thunder. This substantial package reflects a belief in leveraging future assets.

Earlier optimism about McCain had been high, with Morey comparing the Sixers’ guard rotation—featuring Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Quentin Grimes, and McCain—to the guard-heavy lineups of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers that contended in last season’s NBA Finals. Despite McCain’s promising rookie campaign, a season-ending knee injury in December 2024 and inconsistencies this season resulted in him falling out of the team’s rotation.

Regarding questions about the organization’s faith in McCain, Morey stated,

“I wouldn’t say that. No, I think he has a tremendous future. Sort of the whole thing with people who don’t like the deal is they’ll leave off the return, minimize this draft, which we think is good, and things like that. … That return is for a starter-quality player on a good team. It’s actually above that. We do a lot of analysis on how we think things will play out both here and around the league going forward, in terms of the quality of play. What kinds of returns will there be for what players in the future?”

He then added,

“And the bottom line is, Jared is a player who’s a great future bet and a potential great player. We wish him luck. We feel that this returns sets us up better to set up the team in the future.”

Future Prospects from Draft Picks and Team Building

The Sixers view the acquired first-round pick as a potential asset for maneuvering in the upcoming draft, while the three second-round selections could be used strategically to advance their draft positioning. Despite this long-term outlook, Morey acknowledged that trade discussions involving these picks did not yield any immediate blockbuster acquisitions, stating,

“Nothing materialized for a player that we thought could move the needle with those picks now. But we feel like going forward, those picks will help us build the team in the future in a good way.”

Although Morey had the backing to exceed the luxury tax limit, the team again chose to remain under it for the fourth consecutive season, even after Embiid’s comments signaling a desire for more aggressive roster moves. Morey recognized the optics this creates but remains firm, saying,

“I understand the perception. I hope to defeat it by finding a deal that I can go to ownership and say, ‘We think this move is the right move to do for that and create those apron issues.’ But I haven’t been able to recommend that move yet.”

Confidence in Current Roster and Coaching Staff

Morey expressed confidence in the talent currently on the roster, highlighting the progression of Joel Embiid as he returns to form, and Tyrese Maxey’s development into an All-Star starter. He also praised Kelly Oubre Jr. for delivering the best basketball of his career this season. Morey emphasized the team’s depth in the frontcourt, stating,

“We love the bigs we have with Joel, [Andre Drummond and Adem] Bona. We feel like guys are contributing up and down the roster. Coach [Nick] Nurse has done a tremendous job putting us in with the top few teams in the East in terms of how we’re playing. So that’s why we understand the fan reaction. Obviously, the big move was with Jared. Because we’re playing well, we were trying to upgrade the team and add to the team now. That was goal No 1.”

While some fans remain skeptical about the Sixers’ approach during the trade window, Morey stands by the team’s current makeup and looks ahead to demonstrating their strength on the court as the season progresses.
