Jeremy Theron McNichols is an American professional football running back for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Boise State Broncos and was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL draft. McNichols has also been a member of several other NFL teams.
Early Life and Background
Jeremy McNichols was born on December 26, 1995, in Long Beach, California. He attended Lakewood High School before transferring to Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, for his senior year. Growing up, he played in Snoop Dogg’s youth football league alongside fellow NFL player John Ross. McNichols showcased his versatility by playing both running back and wide receiver in high school, earning the nickname “McWeapon”. He rushed for 877 yards with nine touchdowns and had 72 receptions for 934 yards and 10 touchdowns during his high school career. Initially committed to the University of Utah, he later chose to play for Boise State University.
Path to American Football
McNichols enrolled at Boise State in August 2014, where he initially planned to redshirt his freshman year. However, he ended up playing in nine games during the 2014 season, recording 17 carries for 159 yards and a touchdown, along with 15 receptions for 155 yards and another touchdown. As a sophomore in 2015, he had a breakout season, rushing for 1,337 yards and 20 touchdowns while also catching 51 passes for 460 yards and six touchdowns. In 2016, he continued to excel, rushing for 1,709 yards and 23 touchdowns, along with 37 receptions for 474 yards and four touchdowns. On December 26, 2016, McNichols announced his decision to forgo his senior season and enter the 2017 NFL Draft.

Early Career (2017)
Jeremy McNichols was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round (162nd overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft, becoming the 17th running back selected that year. However, he was released by the Buccaneers on September 2, 2017, shortly after the draft.
Breakthrough (2018-2020)
Following his release from the Buccaneers, McNichols joined the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad on September 4, 2017, and was promoted to the active roster on November 29. He had a brief stint with the Indianapolis Colts, where he was signed to the practice squad but was waived shortly after. In October 2018, he signed with the Denver Broncos’ practice squad before being signed by the Tennessee Titans in December 2018. During his first season with the Titans, McNichols played in all 16 games as a backup to Derrick Henry, finishing the season with 47 carries for 204 yards and a touchdown, along with 12 receptions for 55 yards. In 2020, McNichols scored his first NFL touchdown on a one-yard rush against the Cleveland Browns. He finished the season with 41 carries for 156 yards and 28 receptions for 240 yards and a touchdown. McNichols was waived on January 8, 2022, but was re-signed to the practice squad shortly after.
