James “Jimmie” Ward (born July 18, 1991) is an American professional football safety who most recently played in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Northern Illinois Huskies and was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. After spending the first nine seasons of his career with the 49ers, Ward joined the Houston Texans in 2023, where he served as a defensive leader before being released in March 2026.

Jimmie Ward was born on July 18, 1991, in Racine, Wisconsin. He grew up with strong family ties to athletics, and he is the cousin of former NBA player Caron Butler. Ward later relocated to Alabama, where he attended Davidson High School in Mobile. At Davidson, he developed into a hard-hitting defensive back and was rated as a two-star recruit by Rivals.com coming out of high school.
During his senior season at Davidson, Ward led the Warriors with 101 tackles, including 73 solo stops, while adding eight pass break-ups, one interception, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, three blocked kicks, and three quarterback sacks. He was named the team’s Defensive MVP as Davidson posted a 10–3 record and advanced to the state quarterfinals. As a junior, he recorded 93 tackles, seven pass break-ups, and five interceptions, foreshadowing the production he would bring to the college level.
Path to the NFL
Ward attended Northern Illinois University from 2010 to 2013, where he quickly established himself as one of the most versatile defensive backs in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). As a true freshman in 2010, he appeared in all 14 games and blocked a school-record three punts on his way to being named the Huskies’ Special Teams Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Early Career (2014–2015)
The San Francisco 49ers selected Ward in the first round, 30th overall, of the 2014 NFL Draft, making him the third safety taken behind Calvin Pryor and HaHa Clinton-Dix. He signed a four-year, $7.11 million rookie contract that included $5.30 million in guarantees. Ward opened his rookie season as a backup safety and nickel cornerback under head coach Jim Harbaugh, recording 20 combined tackles and two pass deflections before a foot injury ended his year in November and sent him to injured reserve.
In 2015, Ward was again a backup free safety before seizing the starting job midway through the season. He posted career highs of 57 combined tackles, six pass deflections, one sack, one interception, and one touchdown, returning his first career pick, an interception off Jay Cutler, 29 yards for a score against the Chicago Bears. 2025 Season Performance
Ward’s 2025 season was overshadowed by off-field developments. On June 12, 2025, he was arrested in Magnolia, Texas, on a third-degree felony assault charge described as family related and was booked into Montgomery County Jail without bond. He was later released on a $30,000 bond and, in September 2025, a Montgomery County court did not find probable cause and declined to indict him on the alleged domestic violence claims.
On August 7, 2025, Ward was arrested on a charge of drunk driving, which also violated a condition of his earlier bail.
