Matthew Savoie was born on January 1, 2004, in St. Albert, Alberta, Canada. Growing up in a hockey-centric culture, he was exposed to the sport from a young age, which laid the foundation for his future career. Path to Hockey
Savoie applied for exceptional player status to enter the Western Hockey League (WHL) as a 15-year-old but was turned down. However, he later broke this commitment and signed with the Winnipeg Ice, who had selected him first overall in the 2019 WHL bantam draft. Early Career (2023)
Savoie made his professional debut with the Rochester Americans, the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres, at the end of the 2022–23 season. He appeared in two playoff games against the Hershey Bears. Following this, he sustained an upper-body injury during rookie camp entering the 2023–24 season, which placed him on injured reserve.
Breakthrough (2023)
On October 22, 2023, Savoie was assigned to the Rochester Americans on a conditioning loan, where he recorded five points in six games. He was recalled to the Sabres on November 6, 2023, and made his NHL debut on November 10, 2023, recording less than four minutes of ice time. The following day, he was reassigned to the Wenatchee Wild of the WHL. On January 4, 2024, he was traded to the Moose Jaw Warriors, where he had a standout performance, scoring two goals and five points in his debut.
Notable Works and Milestones
Savoie was traded to the Edmonton Oilers on July 5, 2024, in exchange for Ryan McLeod and Tyler Tullio. On February 22, 2025, he recorded his first career NHL point by assisting on Leon Draisaitl’s goal. He scored his first NHL goal on October 30, 2025, during a game against the New York Rangers.
