Early Life and Background

Michael Dwumfour was born on January 1, 1998, in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. He is of Ghanaian descent. Dwumfour attended Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, where he played alongside Rashan Gary before transferring to DePaul Catholic High School. At DePaul Catholic, he played for their football team, showcasing his talent as a defensive player. As a junior, he recorded 42 tackles and three quarterback sacks. In his senior year, he posted 55 tackles and seven sacks, which led him to commit to the University of Michigan. He was rated as a three-star prospect by ESPN, Rivals.com, and Scout.com. Dwumfour began his college football career at the University of Michigan, where he made his debut as a true freshman in the season-opener against Hawaii. Throughout his college career, he demonstrated steady improvement. As a sophomore, he played in nine games, recording four tackles and one sack. In his junior year, he played in all 13 games, starting two, and totaled 21 tackles, one interception, and three sacks. As a senior in 2019, he played in ten games with two starts, making nine tackles and one sack. He then transferred to Rutgers University for his final season in 2020, where he started eight games at defensive tackle and made 25 tackles, earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors.

Path to American Football

After going undrafted in the 2021 NFL Draft, Michael Dwumfour signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent. He made an immediate impact during the preseason, particularly in the first game against the New York Giants, but unfortunately suffered an injury that led to his release with an injury settlement shortly thereafter. Following his time with the Jets, Dwumfour was signed by the Houston Texans to their practice squad on October 13, 2021. He was activated on December 25, making his NFL debut against the Los Angeles Chargers, where he recorded a half-sack. He finished the season playing in three games and recording five tackles. In January 2022, he signed a reserve/future contract with the Texans but faced challenges with injuries, including being placed on injured reserve in October 2022.
