Nikolas Matinpalo (born 5 October 1998) is a Finnish professional ice hockey player who is a defenceman for the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL). Matinpalo made his Liiga debut with Ilves during the 2018–19 season and later signed an entry-level contract with the Senators in May 2023. He represented Finland in international tournaments and began his professional career in 2018.

Early Life and Background

Nikolas Matinpalo was born in Espoo, Finland. Growing up in a country known for its strong ice hockey tradition, Matinpalo was exposed to the sport at an early age. His passion for hockey led him to pursue the game seriously, and he began playing at local clubs in his hometown.

Matinpalo’s early involvement in hockey laid the foundation for his future career. He developed his skills through youth leagues and local competitions, eventually earning a spot in the junior system of Ilves, one of Finland’s prominent hockey clubs.

His opportunity in the NHL arrived when he was recalled by the Senators due to injuries on the team.

On 28 October 2023, Matinpalo made his NHL debut in a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, contributing to a 5–2 victory. He played a total of four games with the Senators before returning to Belleville, where he continued to develop his game and participated in the Calder Cup playoffs.
