Nyara Sabally Bio
Nyara Sabally (born 26 February 2000) is a German-American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Toronto Tempo of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). A 6 ft 5 in (1.96 m) forward, she has built her career on rebounding, interior scoring and post defense. In addition to her playing career, Sabally has also worked in coaching, serving as an assistant coach at Sacramento State. She is recognized as a WNBA champion and a member of Germany’s senior national team.
Sabally first rose to international attention as a teenager when she represented Germany at youth competitions, including a gold-medal performance at the 2018 FIBA U18 Women’s European Championship. After a college career at Oregon that was interrupted by knee injuries, she was selected fifth overall by the New York Liberty in the 2022 WNBA Draft. Nyara Sabally was born on 26 February 2000 in Bandon, Oregon, in the United States. On 7 November 2017, Sabally signed a national letter of intent to play college basketball at the University of Oregon. College Career (2018–2022)
Sabally enrolled at Oregon for the 2018–19 season but redshirted her entire freshman year after tearing her ACL at the 2018 FIBA U18 Women’s European Championship. She then re-tore the same ACL in the summer of 2019, forcing her to miss a second consecutive season. The injuries delayed her college debut but also gave her time to develop her body and her understanding of the game.
During the 2020–21 redshirt sophomore season, Sabally played in 23 of Oregon’s 24 games and made 21 starts. She led the team in scoring (12.9), rebounding (7.3), field goals (122), double-doubles (4) and double-figure scoring games (19), while ranking third in the Pac-12 in field-goal percentage (54.7) and third in offensive rebounding (2.7). She became the first Pac-12 player since Chiney Ogwumike in 2013 to average at least 15 points, seven rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals and blocks over a season, earning All-Pac-12 honors for the second time. On 28 March 2022, she declared for the 2022 WNBA Draft, finishing her Oregon career with 666 points, 354 rebounds and 87 assists in two playing seasons.
WNBA Career (2022–Present)
On 11 April 2022, Sabally was selected fifth overall by the New York Liberty in the 2022 WNBA Draft. On 15 April 2022, Liberty general manager Jonathan Kolb announced that Sabally would miss the 2022 season after aggravating a right knee injury that had already required two surgeries. On 28 February 2023, she signed her rookie scale contract with the Liberty, officially beginning her WNBA career.
Sabally helped the Liberty win the 2023 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup in her rookie campaign, then missed the first half of the 2024 WNBA season while recovering from a back injury. She returned before the Olympic break and joined the German national team in Paris. In Game 5 of the 2024 WNBA Finals against the Minnesota Lynx, she scored 13 points with seven rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench, including seven consecutive third-quarter points that gave the Liberty their first lead of the game, a steal and layup in overtime that extended the lead, and a defensive rebound with 13 seconds remaining in overtime.
