Satou Sabally Bio

Isatou “Satou” Sabally is a German-American professional basketball player for the Phoenix Mercury of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Born on April 25, 1998, in New York City, she has represented Germany in international competitions since 2019. Sabally played college basketball for the Oregon Ducks from 2017 to 2020 before being selected second overall by the Dallas Wings in the 2020 WNBA draft. Known for her versatile skill set, she has earned multiple WNBA All-Star selections, the WNBA Most Improved Player Award in 2023, and an All-WNBA First Team selection that same year.

Early Life and Background

Satou Sabally was born in New York City to a Gambian father, Jerreh, and a German mother, Heike, and is the third of seven children. Her given name, Isatou, is that of her father’s sister, and according to Sabally, the name is derived from Aisha, one of the wives of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. When she was two years old, the family moved to Gambia, and later to Berlin as she prepared to start school. A local coach discovered her as a nine-year-old at a playground, and she began attending practices, becoming the only girl on her first youth team.

In 2012, Sabally joined the Berlin basketball club TuS Lichterfelde of the 2. Damen-Basketball-Bundesliga, where she played until 2015. After her sophomore year of high school, she moved from Berlin to attend the Rotteck Gymnasium in Freiburg and joined the professional team Eisvögel USC Freiburg of the 1. Damen-Basketball-Bundesliga, playing there from 2015 to 2017. To preserve her NCAA eligibility, she did not accept a salary and retained her amateur status. In 2017, she became the first international player to play in the girls’ Jordan Brand Classic.

Path to Basketball

Sabally’s path to elite basketball began in the German second division before she transitioned to the top-flight 1. Damen-Basketball-Bundesliga. Her standout play in Europe caught the attention of American recruiters, and in 2017 she moved to the United States to play for the Oregon Ducks. During her three seasons at Oregon, she contributed to three Pac-12 regular-season titles, two Pac-12 Tournament championships, and the program’s first-ever NCAA tournament Final Four in 2019.

Across her Oregon career, Sabally earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors in 2018, two All-Pac-12 selections in 2019 and 2020, and the Cheryl Miller Award in 2020 as the nation’s best small forward. She finished her college career ranked seventh on Oregon’s all-time scoring list with 1,508 career points. After her junior season, she entered the 2020 WNBA draft and was selected second overall by the Dallas Wings.

Satou Sabally Career

Early Career (2020–2022)

Sabally was selected as the second overall pick in the 2020 WNBA draft by the Dallas Wings. Her rookie season was played inside the Wubble, where a back issue and concussion limited her to 16 of 22 regular-season games, but she was still named to the 2020 WNBA All-Rookie Team. In her second season, she missed the first six games while playing in the 2021 FIBA 3×3 Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament with Germany, then earned a 2021 WNBA All-Star selection before nagging Achilles soreness cut her season short to 17 of 32 games.

The 2022 WNBA season saw Sabally play in only 11 regular-season games, missing time first due to a late arrival from her Turkish season with Fenerbahçe and later because of knee and ankle injuries. Despite her absence, the Wings finished with a .500 or better record and made the 2022 WNBA Playoffs as the sixth seed, winning their first playoff game as a franchise since 2009 before falling to the Connecticut Sun.

Dallas Wings Breakthrough (2023–2024)

After injuries limited her to 44 appearances through her first three seasons, Sabally broke through in the 2023 WNBA season, starting 38 games and posting career-high averages in points, rebounds, assists, and steals. She was named a 2023 WNBA All-Star starter, won the WNBA Most Improved Player Award, and finished fifth in MVP voting. On July 28, 2023, she recorded the second triple-double in Wings franchise history with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in a win over the Washington Mystics. She led Dallas to its first winning record since relocating to Dallas and its first franchise semifinal since 2009.

Following the 2023 season, Sabally signed a one-year deal with the Wings worth $195,000 as a restricted free agent. The 2024 season, however, was difficult, as a shoulder injury sustained on national team duty kept her out of the first 25 games. She returned after the Olympic break and started all 15 remaining games, posting new career-highs in assists and three-point percentage, but the Wings finished 11th with a 9–31 record.

Phoenix Mercury Era (2025)

On January 9, 2025, Sabally announced she had played her last game in Dallas and would seek a new team. On February 2, 2025, a four-team trade sent Sabally, Kalani Brown, and Sevgi Uzun to the Phoenix Mercury, along with Alyssa Thomas from the Connecticut Sun. Despite being eligible for supermax money due to the core designation, Sabally signed a one-year contract worth $215,000. In her debut, an 81–59 win over the Seattle Storm, she scored 27 points, setting a new franchise record for most points scored by a Mercury player in a team debut.

During the 2025 WNBA season, Sabally was named an All-Star starter for the third time, though she missed the game due to an ankle injury. She also became a vocal advocate for player rights, criticizing the league’s CBA proposal and the demanding 44-game schedule on player safety grounds. Despite the injury, she helped the Mercury secure the No. 4 playoff seed. In October 2025, she was diagnosed with a concussion and ruled out of Game 4 of the WNBA Finals after falling while going after a rebound and making contact with the leg of Kierstan Bell.

Driving Style and Strengths

Satou Sabally is a versatile forward who offers an unusual combination of ball-handling, perimeter shooting, and size, a package that has earned her the nickname “Unicorn.” Her playing style has drawn frequent comparisons to men’s NBA star Kristaps Porziņģis and German compatriot Dirk Nowitzki. She has cited Maya Moore, Skylar Diggins, and Candace Parker as her basketball inspirations.

Notable Events and Milestones

One of Sabally’s signature moments came on June 11, 2023, when she played against her sister Nyara for the first time in their WNBA careers, making them the fifth set of sisters to face each other in league history. On the international stage, she scored 33 points against Japan at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the eighth-highest point tally in women’s Olympic tournament history, and helped Germany reach the quarterfinals in its first-ever Olympic appearance.

Satou Sabally’s 2025 WNBA season with the Phoenix Mercury began with a record-setting debut and ended in the WNBA Finals. After being acquired in a four-team trade in February, she signed a one-year contract worth $215,000 and opened her Mercury tenure with 27 points against the Seattle Storm, the most by any player in a franchise debut. Despite the injury setbacks, Sabally helped the Mercury secure the No. 4 playoff seed and a first-round matchup against the defending champion New York Liberty. The Mercury advanced to the WNBA Finals, but Sabally was diagnosed with a concussion in October and ruled out of Game 4 after a collision with the leg of Kierstan Bell while pursuing a rebound. The postseason run capped a season in which Sabally was also a leading voice in the WNBA’s CBA negotiations, publicly criticizing the league’s 44-game schedule on player safety grounds.
