Ryan Hartman Bio
Ryan Keyes Hartman (born September 20, 1994) is an American professional ice hockey forward for the Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League (NHL). Hartman was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round (30th overall) of the 2013 NHL entry draft. He made his NHL debut in 2015 for the Blackhawks. He is the first player in NHL history to be born in the state of South Carolina.
Early Life and Background
Ryan Hartman was born on September 20, 1994, in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He was raised by Craig and Kim Hartman in West Dundee, Illinois, where he developed a passion for hockey, particularly as a fan of the Chicago Blackhawks. Hartman attended William Fremd High School in Palatine, Illinois, another suburb of Chicago. He began ice skating at the age of three and played minor ice hockey with several Chicago-area teams, most notably the Chicago Mission, where he won multiple state championships. During his time with the Mission, he formed friendships with future NHL players Nick Schmaltz and Vinnie Hinostroza. At the age of 15, Hartman joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP), prompting his family to relocate to Ann Arbor, Michigan. His father built an ice skating rink in their backyard, which Hartman utilized to enhance his shooting skills. During the 2011–12 NTDP season, he finished second on the team with 38 points in 55 games.
Path to Hockey
As a 17-year-old, preparing for the 2012–13 season, Hartman initially committed to play college hockey for the Miami RedHawks in NCAA Division I. However, he later de-committed to join the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Hartman joined the Whalers for the 2012–13 OHL season and was invited to participate in the CHL Top Prospects Game. He also played for the gold-medal-winning American squad at the IIHF World U20 Championship, solidifying his status as a top prospect for the 2013 NHL entry draft.

Early Career (2014–2015)
Ryan Hartman began his professional career when the Chicago Blackhawks signed him to a three-year entry-level contract on November 18, 2013. He made his NHL debut on February 13, 2015, against the New Jersey Devils. Hartman started the 2016–17 NHL season with the Blackhawks, where he was expected to utilize his physical play style following the trade of Andrew Shaw. He scored his first career goal against Jake Allen of the St. Louis Blues during the NHL’s season opener on October 12, 2016. Hartman recorded his first career hat trick against the Nashville Predators on January 8, 2017, finishing the season with 19 goals and 12 assists.
Breakthrough (2016–2018)
During the 2017–18 season, Hartman recorded eight goals and 17 assists in 57 games for the Blackhawks. On February 26, 2018, he was traded to the Nashville Predators, where he played 21 regular-season games, scoring three goals and three assists. The Predators traded Hartman to the Philadelphia Flyers on February 25, 2019, where he added two goals and six points in 19 games. On July 1, 2019, Hartman signed a two-year, $3.8 million contract with the Minnesota Wild.
