On April 1, 2012, Carrick signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He began his professional career in the ECHL with the Idaho Steelheads, where he made his debut during the 2012–13 season, scoring 16 goals and 37 points in 50 games. He was later reassigned to the Maple Leafs’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, where he finished his rookie season with two goals in 19 games. In his first full AHL season, he registered 14 goals in 62 games and was named an alternate captain.
